I was just reading about some of his work involving "Culturally-Situated Design Tools," which, as the name implies, attempt to bridge the gap between abstract stuff like numbers and stuff that matters to kids, like corn rows, Native American beads, and snowflakes. You have to be a subscriber to the Journal to read it, however, so I found a different Ravitch article on the same subject for your reading "pleasure." "Ethnomathematics" is the theory that minority children will learn math best if they are taught about their culture's mathematic progression and heritage. For instance, Hispanic children will learn math best if they are taught about the Mayan number system (but not, of course, any math tied to Spain). Let me come right out and say it. I'm educating and raising my kids to be successful. I'm educating and raising them to be leaders. I'm educating them to have a full and satisfying life, doing whatever it is they want to do. And they'll be able to do this because they will have the knowledge and the tools to do whatever it is they want to do. Kids who learn math according to their ethnicity will not. As Ravitch says: Particularism is akin to cultural Lysenkoism, for it takes as its premise the spurious notion that cultural traits are inherited. It implies a dubious, dangerous form of cultural predestination. Children are taught that if their ancestors could do it, so could they. But what happens if a child is from a cultural group that made no significant contribution to science or mathematics? Must children find a culturally appropriate field in which to strive? How does a teacher find the right cultural buttons for children of mixed heritage? And how in the world will teachers use this technique when the children in their classes are drawn from many different cultures, as is usually the case? By the time that every culture gets its due, there may be no time left to teach the subject itself.

They are continually in search of a fix that will make it easy, relevant, fun, and even politically relevant. In the early 1990s, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics issued standards that disparaged basic skills like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, since all of these could be easily performed on a calculator. The council preferred real life problem solving, using everyday situations. Attempts to solve problems without basic skills caused some critics, especially professional mathematicians, to deride the "new, new math" as "rainforest algebra." In a comparison of a 1973 algebra textbook and a 1998 "contemporary mathematics" textbook, Williamson Evers and Paul Clopton found a dramatic change in topics. In the 1973 book, for example, the index for the letter "F" included "factors, factoring, fallacies, finite decimal, finite set, formulas, fractions, and functions." In the 1998 book, the index listed "families (in poverty data), fast food nutrition data, fat in fast food, feasibility study, feeding tours, ferris wheel, fish, fishing, flags, flight, floor plan, flower beds, food, football, Ford Mustang, franchises, and fund-raising carnival." Sponsored by the anthropology department and Treganza Anthropology Museum, the exhibit runs through April 28 in the department of anthropology’s Hohenthal Gallery (Science Building room 388.) Activities include recreating the elaborate sona sand drawings of the Chokwe people of northeast Angola, examining the geometric body paintings of the Mebengokre people of central Brazil, or just contemplating a game of mancala. Mariana Ferreira, assistant professor of anthropology and exhibit co-organizer, explained the term and some of the principles behind it, while standing in front of the several different exhibit stations. “Ethnomathematics involves much more than the just mathematics of indigenous people,” Ferreira said. “It’s actually an educational program to advance access of mathematical knowledge to people of color, and also acknowledge the contributions of people of color and indigenous people to mathematics.”

Davison Limited English proficient (LEP) students experience difficulties in learning mathematics that may have little to do with difficulties in processing mathematical ideas. When these LEP students are from different cultures, speak languages other than English as their primary language, and have preferred differences in cognitive processing, the typical approach to organized mathematics instruction observed in American classrooms today is not appropriate. An ethnomathematics approach to the curriculum is advocated in this paper as a means of addressing this concern. D'Ambrosio (1985) defines 'ethnomathematics' as the mathematics needed by a particular subgroup of the population, be it an occupational group or a cultural group. Ethnomathematics includes curricular relevance, but is much more than building a curriculum around the local interests and culture of the learners. This local focus can become limited to the mathematics the students want to study, which they see related to either their traditional or emerging roles. While it is important not to ignore this local perspective, such an approach can overlook the organization of mathematical ideas and preclude the development of a structured mathematics curriculum. The goal is to provide students with mathematics content and approaches that will enable them to successfully master modern mathematics. An ethnomathematics approach to the curriculum can be a vehicle for achieving such a goal.
