For the use of dynamical systems in cognitive science, see Dynamical system (cognitive science) The Lorenz attractor is an example of a non-linear dynamical system. Studying this system helped give rise to Chaos theory The dynamical system concept is a mathematical formalization for any fixed "rule" which describes the time dependence of a point's position in its ambient space . Examples include the mathematical models that describe the swinging of a clock pendulum, the flow of water in a pipe, and the number of fish each spring in a lake. A dynamical system has a state determined by a collection of real numbers , or more generally by a set of points in an appropriate state space . Small changes in the state of the system correspond to small changes in the numbers. The numbers are also the coordinates of a geometrical space—a manifold . The evolution rule of the dynamical system is a fixed rule that describes what future states follow from the current state. The rule is

Zooming Sierpinski This project is a National Science Foundation sponsored project designed to help secondary school and college teachers of mathematics bring contemporary topics in mathematics (chaos, fractals, dynamics) into the classroom, and to show them how to use technology effectively in this process. At this point, there are a number of Java applets available at this site for use in teaching ideas concerning chaos and fractals. There are also several interactive papers designed to help teachers and students understand the mathematics behind such topics as iteration, fractals, iterated function systems (the chaos game), and the Mandelbrot and Julia sets.
Available at this site:
JAVA Applets for chaos and fractals
Play the chaos game; explore iterated function systems; and make fractal movies, like the Dancing Triangles and Zooming Sierpinski above, all at your own computer. These applets are now up and running!
    The Mandelbrot Set Explorer
This is an interactive site designed to teach the mathematics behind the Mandelbrot and Julia sets. It consists of a series of tours in which you will discover some of the incredibly interesting and beautiful mathematics behind these images. The site is designed to be used by readers of

Learning Dynamical Systems: A Tutorial
This is the preface for a web-based tutorial on learning dynamical systems. The tutorial is organized as a hypertext document and includes a set of readings (some of which are available on the web), a set of html documents (providing context, explanations, definitions, and pointers to additional readings), and links to Mathematica packages and notebooks that allow readers to explore the main ideas described in the papers in an interactive computational setting. The tutorial is produced concurrently with a course held at Brown University since the 1995 Fall semester. A preliminary syllabus is available for the course. You are cordially invited to follow along with the course, but we warn you that the web pages covering the tutorial material are under construction; existing pages will be revised and new pages will be added as the semester progresses. If you want to follow along in the fall and avoid running into pages under construction, we advise you to keep pace with the schedule outlined in the syllabus. We invite your suggestions for improving the tutorial. Learning Dynamical Systems

Electronic only, continuous publication The SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems (SIADS) publishes research articles on the mathematical analysis and modeling of dynamical systems and its application to the physical, engineering, life, and social sciences. SIADS is published in electronic format only. The use of color, animated visualizations, and internal linking is strongly encouraged where it enhances the exposition, but papers without these enhancements are accepted as well; review is based on research content. Submitted articles should contribute either to the theory of dynamical systems, to the understanding of dynamical systems phenomena through experiment or numerical simulation, or to the use of dynamical systems methods in applications.
