Jump to: navigation search Discrete mathematics , also called finite mathematics or decision mathematics , is the study of mathematical structures that are fundamentally discrete in the sense of not supporting or requiring the notion of continuity . Objects studied in finite mathematics are largely countable sets such as integers , finite graphs , and formal languages Discrete mathematics has become popular in recent decades because of its applications to computer science . Concepts and notations from discrete mathematics are useful to study or describe objects or problems in computer algorithms and programming languages . In some mathematics curricula, finite mathematics courses cover discrete mathematical concepts for business, while discrete mathematics courses emphasize concepts for computer science majors. Description
The aim of Discrete Mathematics is to provide a common forum for significant research in different areas of discrete mathematics and combinatorics. The fields covered by Discrete Mathematics include, for example: graph and hypergraph theory, network theory, enumeration, coding theory, block designs, the theory of partially ordered sets, extremal set theory, matroid theory, algebraic combinatorics, polyhedra, combinatorial and discrete geometry, matrices, and discrete probability theory. Items in the journal may be research papers, short notes, survey or expository articles, or research problems. Efforts are made to process the submission of short notes quickly. Discrete Mathematics also publishes a some Special Issues, most of which are devoted to selected papers from a particular conference. Such issues are fully refereed and adhere to the normal high standards of the journal.

Discrete Mathematics by WWL Chen This set of notes has been compiled over a period of more than 20 years. Chapters 1-4 were used in various forms and on many occasions between 1981 and 1990 by the author at Imperial College, University of London. An extra 14 chapters were written in Sydney in 1991 and 1992. Chapters 7 and 12 were added in 1997. The material has been organized in such a way to create a single volume suitable for use in the unit MATH237 at Macquarie University. This unit is currently taught in two parallel strands. The following is the suggested order for the presentation of the material:
    • C: Chapters 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12.
    • M: Chapters 3, 4, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20.
To read the notes, click the chapters below for connection to the appropriate PDF files. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader Version 4.0 or later. The material is available free to all individuals, on the understanding that it is not to be used for financial gains, and may be downloaded and/or photocopied, with or without permission from the author. However, the documents may not be kept on any information storage and retrieval system without permission from the author, unless such system is not accessible to any individuals other than its owners.

Discrete Mathematics Discrete mathematics is the branch of mathematics dealing with objects that can assume only distinct, separated values. The term "discrete mathematics" is therefore used in contrast with "continuous mathematics," which is the branch of mathematics dealing with objects that can vary smoothly (and which includes, for example, calculus ). Whereas discrete objects can often be characterized by integers , continuous objects require real numbers The study of how discrete objects combine with one another and the probabilities of various outcomes is known as combinatorics . Other fields of mathematics that are considered to be part of discrete mathematics include graph theory and the theory of computation . Topics in number theory such as congruences and recurrence relations are also considered part of discrete mathematics. The study of topics in discrete mathematics usually includes the study of algorithms , their implementations, and efficiencies. Discrete mathematics is the mathematical language of computer science, and as such, its importance has increased dramatically in recent decades.

Indeed, the use of discrete mathematics has an essential part in the development of students' mathematical power in a society grounded in technology and communication. In particular, discrete mathematics includes and addresses: Social Decision Making, Fair Division, Election Theory, Graph Theory, Counting Techniques, Matrix Models, and Mathematical Iteration/Recursion. Matrices and Determinants Matrices : A rectangular array of entries is called a Matrix. The entries may be real, complex or functions. The entries are also called as the elements of the matrix. The rectangular array of entries are enclosed in an ordinary bracket or in square bracket. Determinants : Let A = [a ij Permutations and Combinations Permutations : The different arrangements that can be made with a given number of things taking some or all of them at a time are called permutations. Combinations : The selection of a number of things taking some or all of them at a time are called combinations. Sequences and Series Sequence : A set of numbers arranged in a definite order according to some definite rule is called a sequence.A sequence is a function whose domain is the set N of natural numbers. Series : Indicated sum of the terms in a sequence is called a series. The result of performing the additions is the sum of the series.
