Differential Geometry, Dislocations and Einstein's Teleparallelism
Einstein's teleparallel theory discolations we got a very nice tool to understand Einstein's teleparallelism !
Surprisingly, the theory of dislocations showes many similarities with electrodynamics, including a relativistic behaviour of moving dislocations. Not enough here, this 'electromagnetical' behaviour of dislocations was discovered even before the relation to torsion and thus the relation to Einstein's unified theory was revealed - you may believe this is just coincidence, I don't !
thus Einstein's attempt, after all, may be not that wrong as it seems today.

Luther Pfahler Eisenhart Our Price (Table of Contents) Availability: In Stock
ISBN: Page Count: Dimensions:
5 5/8 x 8 1/2 Created especially for graduate students, this introductory treatise on differential geometry offers an unusually detailed and concrete approach. Chapter I, devoted to the theory of space curves, covers parametric equations, tangents to a curve, osculating planes, and normals. The text proceeds to examinations of the geometry of a surface in the neighborhood of a point, Gauss' method, envelopes, the moving trihedral, differential parameters, systems of curves, geodesics, conformal representation, and applications of the theory to quadrics, ruled surfaces, and other areas. The last part of the book examines the deformation of surfaces, rectilinear congruences, cyclic systems, and triply orthogonal systems of surfaces. 1909 ed.

This course builds on MTH164 to describe calculus on curves, and surfaces. It provides useful tools for theoretical physics (in particular relativity theory) and the theory of hydrodynamics. It is also a useful basis for computer graphics. How can you show that NO flat map of the earth can EVER preserve all distances? Take this course... ask about Gauss curvature.
Topics covered:
Torsion, curvature, the differential geometry of curves and surfaces in 3-space.
Related courses:
MTH256. This is the mathematics used for general relativity and for computer graphics. It is also used in fluid mechanics.

Fast Marching Methods and Level Set Methods are numerical techniques which can follow the evolution of interfaces. These interfaces can develop sharp corners, break apart, and merge together. The techniques have a wide range of applications, including problems in fluid mechanics, combustion, manufacturing of computer chips, computer animation, image processing, structure of snowflakes, and the shape of soap bubbles.
These are two fundamentally different approaches to the problem of tracking moving interfaces, yet they share a common theory and numerical methodology. This web page serves as both an introductory and advanced resource for these ideas, with the goal of providing
  • an intuitive understanding of the techniques
  • the history, evolution, and application of these methods
  • technical details and reference material.
