Still others focus on the challenges in implementing computations. For example, programming language theory studies approaches to describing computations, while computer programming applies specific programming languages to solve specific computational problems. Research Spotlight: Dryad
Dryad is a design tool for virtual trees. The user creates a tree by visually exploring the space of all trees. Dryads around the world communicate to share which trees were picked in the past. A collaborative mapping of the tree space emerges, which every Dryad utilizes to guide users to higher-quality parts of the space.

The Chronicle of Higher Education has ranked UCLA within the top 10 on its 2007 "Top Research Universities Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index" for the field of computer science. The productivity of faculty members is measured and judged on as many as five factors, depending on the most important variables in the given discipline: e.g., books published, journal publications, citations of journal articles, federal grant dollars awarded, and honors and awards. On November 1, 2007, the White House announced this year's Presidential EarlyCareer Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). Professor Eddie Kohler is one of the two young faculty members from UCLA's Henry Samueli
School of Engineering to receive this award and one of the 20 young researchers to be recognized with this award by the National Science Foundation (other federal agencies also make awards). The PECASE award is considered the country's highest honor for engineers and scientists who are in the early part of their careers. It recognizes the recipient's potential for leadership across the frontiers of scientific knowledge during the 21st century.

Welcome to the website of the Computer Science Department at Indiana University Bloomington. The Computer Science Department is one of three principal Department-like entities in the School of Informatics, which includes in addition the Department of Informatics at IU Bloomington and the IUPUI School of Informatics in Indianapolis. In July of 2007, Mike Dunn, the founding Dean of the School, retired, and was succeeded by Bobby Schnabel. We look forward to further developing the strengths of our Department under the new Dean's leadership and to combining the many diverse research areas represented across the entire School to enhance and expand the opportunities for undergraduate and graduate education in Computer Science. Computer Science is a rapidly evolving discipline, and in the coming years an exciting diversity of opportunities will become available for highly-trained computer scientists.
