    Reliable Computer Mathematics?
By Simon Thompson (UKC) Symbolic mathematical systems, like Axiom, Maple and Mathematica, are in widespread daily use by practising scientists and engineers. These systems are large and complex, and their behaviour is often flawed. This talk will first explore some of the background to this problem. It then addresses ways of adding reasoning to symbolic systems, and in particular work going on in this area at the University of Kent. http://www.cs.ukc.ac.uk/research/tcs/summaries/990301Thompson.html

Recommended ISBN: Publisher: McGraw-Hill Pages: Price: Categories: beginner's c++ java maths Reviewed by Francis Glassborow in C Vu 12-1 (Jan 2000) The last time I looked at a Schaum Outline for a programming language I was seriously disappointed. I had always found books from this series to be good revision material and so was surprised to find material that was poor and often technically flawed. I was very happy to find that the C++ book and the Essential Computer Mathematics books were much more what I expect from a Schaum Outline. I am not so certain about the Java offering, perhaps someone else with more expertise in this subject area would like to give that one a thorough look over. Remember that Schaum Outlines are aimed at being supplementary and revision material for students of the relevant subject. They are not intended to be primary sources of information.

``Constructing a new medium for the communication of Mathematics''
A sk any mathematician , and you'll be told - Mathematics is a dynamic, living subject. But for many people, going beyond the static images and formulas of current mathematics texts requires an effort in creative visualization which is often beyond their means. The Living Mathematics Project hosted at SunSITE UBC is working to apply recent advances in computer programming languages and the technology of the World Wide Web to construct a new medium for the communication of Mathematics.
