Abstract:
Some mathematicians are incorporating new technologies into their classes; many others are interested, but just don't know where or how to take the first step. This minicourse will be a hands-on journey highlighting the use of technology in various settings, including small honors sections of mathematical biology, mid-sized sections of differential equations, and large sections of calculus. Course materials, including a list of WWW sites, will be provided.
Overview:
The introduction of technology into mathematics instruction at the University of South Carolina has largely been a matter of individual initiative, to some extent supported by the department, and more enthusiastically supported by the higher administration, but not systematically coordinated or assessed. This has had both advantages and disadvantages: on the negative side, progress has not been as fast as some of us would have liked, but on the positive side we have not been locked into large commitments and expensive failures. Thus to see a major impact of technology on instruction we had to introduce it into the freshman and sophomore service courses. Several other factors were also at work. Various faculty both in the Mathematics Department and the other departments that it serves became interested in curricular reform. Maple, once solely a research tool, became much more user friendly and amenable to instructional use, and could be purchased under a university wide site license. The NSF, the Lilly Foundation, and a host of other funding agencies began to support instructional innovation, and publications resulting from this support, including new texts, began to appear.

http://sal.linet.gr.jp/A/1/index.shtml
The major purpose of a Computer Algebra System (CAS) is to manipulate a formula symbolically using the computer. For example, expanding, factorizing, root finding, or simplifying an algebraic polynomial are some of the common uses of CAS. However, many systems listed here have gone far beyond that and also offer other functionalities like numerical calculation, graphics, and simulations. They are included in this section because their very original, and still their most distinguishable capability is performing computer algebra. Topics
The topics of the workshop include all aspects of Computer Algebra, from theory to applications and systems.
Purposes
This will be the ninth edition of a workshop initiated in Strasbourg in 1988 and held every second year since. To avoid competition with well-established conferences in the field, the workshop is kept as informal as possible. Its two main purposes are to offer an opportunity for newcomers in the field to present their work and to be a forum for aimed at (but not restricted to) European researchers.

A computer algebra system (CAS) is a software program that facilitates symbolic mathematics . Typically, these systems include
  • arbitrary precision ( bignum ) arithmetic, allowing for instance to evaluate pi to 10,000 digits. symbolic manipulation engine, to simplify algebraic expressions, differentiate and integrate functions and solve equations graphing facility, to produce graphs of functions, typically in two and three dimensions linear algebra subsystem, to allow matrix computations and solving of systems of linear equations high level programming language , allowing users to implement their own algorithms typesetting system for mathematical expressions (see "pretty print"
The study of algorithms useful for computer algebra systems is known as computer algebra The run-time of numerical programs implemented in computer algebra systems is normally longer than that of equivalent programs implemented in systems such as MATLAB GNU Octave or directly in C , because the computer algebra languages are often interpreted and the bignum system may cause overhead. (Note that MATLAB and Octave are interpreted also.)

First Announcement and Call for Papers The methods of Scientific Computing play an important role in research and engineering applications in the fields of the natural and the engineering sciences. The importance of computer algebra methods and computer algebra systems for scientific computing has increased considerably in recent times. During the last decade, a new generation of general-purpose computer algebra systems such as Mathematica, Maple, MuPAD, Reduce, Axiom and others have been developed, which enable the user to solve the following three important tasks within a uniform framework of the same systems:
    • symbolic manipulation
    • numerical computation
    • visualization
The ongoing development of such systems, including their adaptation to parallel environments, puts them to the forefront in scientific computing and enables the practical solution of many complex applied problems in the domains of natural sciences and engineering knowledge. Topics for CASC combine many important questions and methods of scientific computing and the applications of computer algebra, like

Curriculum and Assessment in an Age of Computer Algebra Systems. ERIC Digest.
The use of Computer Algebra System (CAS) technology in the teaching of mathematics is entering a new and crucial stage. A considerable amount of work to date has focused on support of existing curriculum topics and existing curriculum models. Kutzler's seminal book on teaching and learning using DERIVE (1996) includes the phrase "here is an example of how CAS can be used to support an existing curriculum topic". Arguments for the use of CAS as an effective tool in supporting teaching and learning of mathematics are well established. Now comes the real work. Curriculum models and assessment of curriculums are the structures that schools and examining boards create to educate students. The two are deeply connected and the real work of CAS advocates is now to develop curriculum models in which the use of CAS is an integral part, not just of the practice of the curriculum, but, of the conception of the curriculum. A thorough examination of topics must be carried out to decide what really has to stay for conceptual reasons and what is still extant only because of tradition. A crucial part of this process is a demonstration of assessment using CAS. Unless instruments can be found to measure the achievement, or lack of achievement, of that learning which is possible through the use of CAS it is destined to remain as a prop occasionally brought out to support and bolster existing methods of teaching and learning.
