Fields of activity of the institute Research program: For the topics of ongoing research both within the groups of the institute and in cooperation between these groups, see Research Groups and Topics Special programs: These are generally one-semester programs which are dedicated to varying topics from an applied science in which mathematical methods as represented in the institute are of interest, or to a methodological topic which is of importance to several problem classes from applied sciences. The aim will be that through intensive co-operation between representatives of the applied science and mathematicians, methods will be developed which will firstly further advance the applied science and secondly lead to interesting mathematical results and problems. At the beginning of each of these semesters, the topic shall be outlined and defined both from the applications and from the methods side in the course of an international meeting; a result of the meeting shall be a collection of topics of research on which work will be done in the following semester. In this work, both part of the institutes staff and guest scientists will be involved, who ideally will spend the whole semester at the institute. To a large extent, they will be representatives of the applied science, normally rather young Post-docs who are on leave from their institute, in some cases also specialists for mathematical methods which shall reinforce the methodological competence of the institute. The results of the co-operation shall be presented again about a year after the meeting in the course of a conference.

Natural Language Processing at USC/ISI USC/ISI is an academic research Institute that is part of USC's School of Engineering. Many ISI researchers are also on the faculty and computer science, and likewise, many CS graduate students do their dissertation research at ISI. In Business Week's recent survey of academic information technology research, USC ranked fifth overall, and ISI was called "a star" in its survey of international research institutions. ISI's Intelligent Systems Division is one of the largest university based artificial intelligence groups in the world. The natural language group at ISI is large and growing. At around 30 people, we currently have eight full-time Ph.D. researchers, several other full-time research staff, scientists, numerous M.S. and Ph.D. graduate students, and a large summer intern program. Except for speech recognition and dialogue research, we cover most major areas of Human Language Technology. Other academic natural language groups of comparable size in the US include those at Carnegie-Mellon University, Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, and University of Maryland. Research at USC/ISI includes both statistical and knowledge-based/symbolic methods, and most frequently a combination of the two.
Faculty and Staff In addition to publishing research results, we also develop several system prototypes, help organize conferences and workshops, and play an active role in the ongoing development of Computational Linguistics. Our faculty and staff are devoted to natural language processing research, with interests in statistical and symbolic models of language processing, parsing, ontology, creation by text mining, machine translation, natural language generation, text summarization, dialogue, discourse, question answering, and other topics:

Exchanging faces in images
Exchanging faces in images has been possible with previous methods only if both faces were taken from the same viewpoint and with the same illumination, which is rarely the case in real applications. Our algorithm exchanges faces across any changes in viewing conditions by reconstructing a 3D model of a face from a given image, and drawing it into the target image at an angle and illumination that is estimated automatically. • CALENDAR OF EVENTS ... May 30, 2003: Stevens Institute of Technology has been named an NSA Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education for the academic years 2003 through 2006. Computer Science deals with the fundamental scientific laws and engineering principles which govern the design, manufacture and use of computers. Thus, a computer scientist may be involved in work ranging from mathematical studies of algorithms to engineering research on advanced computing systems. The Undergraduate Curriculum is designed to provide a broad based education in both hardware and software, including a strong theoretical component as a foundation for software engineering. Our Graduate program provides more specialized courses in a wide range of topics. Many of the graduate courses are taught by industry experts. The Ph.D. program is for outstanding students with proven ability. All Ph.D. students receive financial support. The major research interests of current faculty members of the CS department can be grouped roughly as follows:
    • computer security computer vision, visualization, and graphics

Chair: Carlos Hartmann T The strength of our programs is attested to by the following facts:
  • The flexibility of our programs which allows students to tailor their programs of study to match their career interests. Having the Computer Engineering, Computer and Information Science, and Electrical Engineering programs in the same department, provides students with the opportunity to take courses spanning multiple disciplines. Having educational programs in a department with a strong research component, assures that students will be exposed to courses covering the latest theories and technologies. Furthermore, interested students have the opportunity to engage in research projects during their studies at Syracuse University . Providing a variety of courses in the Systems and Information Assurance area allows students to have the opportunity to take courses in this area of growing importance at one of the very few universities which has been designated as a National Security Agency Center of Excellence. Preparing graduates who, in addition to excelling in their field of study, have also perfected their problem solving, critical thinking, leadership, and communication skills.
