CSM
The Computer Science and Mathematics Division (CSM) is ORNL's premier source of basic and applied research in high-performance computing, applied mathematics, and intelligent systems. Basic and applied research programs are focused on computational sciences, intelligent systems, and information technologies. Our mission includes working on important national priorities with advanced computing systems, working cooperatively with U.S. Industry to enable efficient, cost-competitive design, and working with universities to enhance science education and scientific awareness. Our researchers are finding new ways to solve problems beyond the reach of most computers and are putting powerful software tools into the hands of students, teachers, government researchers, and industrial scientists.
Benchmarks show Cray X1 suitable for large-scale molecular dynamics simulations a first step in understanding lubrication
There is an enormous variety of problems involving MD that require large amounts of computation, both major extensions of existing studies and exploration in new fields that have yet to be tackled because of a lack of adequate high-performance computing capability. Recent studies using vectorization of Rapaport’s scalable domain-decomposed MD code show essentially perfect scaling up to the full size of the Cray X1 (512 MSP nodes at the time of the runs) at NCCS demonstrating the capability of the Cray X1 to deal with problems of this type.

Faculty Member Publishes Book In China August 19, 2005 Dr. Ching-Kuang Shene, Associate Professor, recently published a book entitled, Selected Well-Known Problems , 1st Simplified Chinese Edition, China Machine Press. Selected Well-Known Problems is a collection of 107 problems chosen from books and research publications. These problems are used to illustrate basic principles of efficiency in programming, well-known techniques, (e.g., non-recursive Towers of Hanoi), new ways of solving traditional problems (e.g., computing factorial of n in (log2 n)2 steps), and challenging concepts (e.g., optimal order for matrix multiplication). Each problem has a description followed by an extensive hint. The analysis of the problem, complexity analysis, a solution in C, and various references are provided in the solution section. Please send questions and comments about this CS Web Page to cswebmaster@mtu.edu

    Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
Electrical engineering, originally taught at MIT in the Physics Department, became an independent degree program in 1882. The Department of Electrical Engineering was formed in 1902, and occupied its new home, the Lowell Building, when MIT was still located near Copley Square in Boston. The Department dedicated its present facilities in the Sherman Fairchild Electrical Engineering and Electronics complex in fall 1973, and a year later, it recognized its growing activity in computer science by changing its name to Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The Department's activities in computer science, communications, and control moved into the architecturally unique and exciting Ray and Maria Stata Center for Computer, Information, and Intelligence Sciences in Spring 2004. The primary mission of the Department is the education of its students. Its three undergraduate programs attract more than 30 percent of all MIT undergraduates, and its doctoral programs are highly ranked and selective. A leader in cooperative education, the Department has operated the highly successful VI-A Internship Program since 1917. It has recently established a five-year Master of Engineering program, under which students stay for a fifth year and receive simultaneously a Bachelor's degree and a Master's of Engineering degree.
