  • Abstract Let R be a normal unmixed integral domain and let A be a semistandard graded R-algebra of integral closure A'. Estimating the number of steps that general algorithms must take to build A' can be viewed as an invariant of A. We show how the degree function "jdeg" can be used to provide bounds that depend on A'. In two major cases, algebras that allow Noether normalizations (affine algebras over fields or Z) and Rees algebras of ideals or modules, such estimates are related to invariants of A, in particular they can be said to be known.

Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 2002, xvii + 588 pp. + CD-ROM, ISBN 3-540-42897-6, $44.95. As is true for many areas in mathematics, the past twenty years have been a time of both explosive growth and change in commutative algebra, particularly as regards the role of computation. In his 1996 review of David Eisenbud's Commutative Algebra with a View toward Algebraic Geometry [7], Mark Green assessed the state of the subject and looked to the future [8, p. 368]: Continue article Advertisement
There is one change which has overtaken commutative algebra that is in my view revolutionary in character-the advent of symbolic computation. This is as yet an unfinished revolution. At present, many researchers routinely use Macaulay, Maple, Mathematica, and CoCoA to perform computer experiments, and as more people become adept at doing this, the list of theorems that have grown out of such experiments will enlarge. The next phase of this development, in which the questions that are considered interesting are influenced by computation and where these questions make contact with the real world, is just beginning to unfold. I suspect that ultimately there will be a sizable applied wing to commutative algebra, which now exists in embryonic form.

About the logo
The shown surface is an embedded copy of the blown-up of the real plane with respect to two polynomials. The used computer graphics has been developed by one of my students in the framework of his Diploma Thesis in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science of our University. This part of the logo gives a hint to my second mathematical interest: Visualization and Popularization in Mathematics The occuring formula describes a blown-up in the language of schemes. It presents my principal mathematical interest: Commutative Algebra and its interaction with Algebraic Geometry
What is Commutative Algebra ?
Commutative Algebra studies commutative rings, thus rings whose multiplication is a commutative operation. Examples of such rings are the Ring Z of integers, or polynomial rings over a field. Commutative Algebra started to be a branch of Mathematics on its own around 1930. Today it is a major field of Algebra with an impressive richness and variety of results and many subbranches (consult the AMS classification scheme under number 13). Commutative Algebra grew out of Algebraic Geometry and Algebraic Number Theory and yet one of its main purposes is to develop algebraic tools for these theories. In particular it became the basis of the Theory of Schemes developed by Dieudonne and Grothendieck around 1960, a theory which sets the framework for contemporary Algebraic Geometry.

Description
This is a basic introductory course in commutative algebra for first year graduate students. Commutative algebra forms the foundation on which algebraic geometry and algebraic number theory are built, however it is an important course for all students interested in studying geometry, topology, and mathematical physics. Topics: Extension and contraction of ideals, modules of fractions, primary decomposition, integral dependence, chain conditions, affine algebraic varieties, Dedekind domains, completions.

Subject: ``The last decade has seen a number of exciting developments at the intersection of commutative algebra with combinatorics. New methods have evolved out of an influx of ideas from such diverse areas as polyhedral geometry, theoretical physics, representation theory, homological algebra, symplectic geometry, graph theory, integer programming, symbolic computation, and statistics. The purpose of this [course] is to provide a selfcontained introduction to some of the resulting combinatorial techniques for dealing with polynomial rings, semigroup rings, and determinantal rings. [The course] mainly [covers] combinatorially defined ideals and their quotients, with a focus on numerical invariants and resolutions, especially under gradings more refined than the standard integer grading.''
