The Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology is dedicated to learning and scholarship, and to a balanced program of teaching, research and service for its faculty. E pidemiology is the study of the distribution and dynamics of disease and health in populations and the inter-relationships of the various forces that influence the frequency of disease in populations. The unit is also a teaching arm of the University, responsible for developing graduate courses and coaching graduate students, residents and medical/dental fellows through statistical aspects of their thesis or dissertation. The teaching programs of the unit cover courses for graduate credits in the School of Graduate Studies, and student contact on research projects, thesis and dissertation preparation. In addition, there is teaching contact with residents and fellows in the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, both as didactic lectures and as coaching in the analysis of their research projects. The Chair of the Department of Biostatistics reports to the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies.
