Welcome to the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology
B iostatistics and epidemiology are considered the basic sciences of public health; together they provide the knowledge base for preventive medicine and public health practice. The Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology is dedicated to learning and scholarship, and to a balanced program of teaching, research and service for its faculty. E pidemiology is the study of the distribution and dynamics of disease and health in populations and the inter-relationships of the various forces that influence the frequency of disease in populations. The primary objective of epidemiology is to search for causative factors and determinants of disease as well as to advance the body of knowledge that will make it possible to control and/or prevent disease, that is, to optimize health.

Online books The appeal of online books is that they are free and convenient for reference. These six online statistics texts are all excellent; browse or search all of them to find the information you need. A New View of Statistics by Will G Hopkins. This is an impressive work that clearly explains many statistical concepts, basic and advanced. It explains things for biologists, with almost no math. The examples are from sports physiology, but any biologist will appreciate the clear illustrated explanations. Statistics: The Study of Stability in Variation . Edited by (and largely written by) Jan de Leeuw (UCLA statistics dept). It has a mathematical approach that some biologists will appreciate, but others will find baffling. Welcome to the Department of Biostatistics T he Department of Biostatistics
supports the research mission of all units of MCG by providing support in statistics, mathematics, and research planning, design, analysis and interpretation. The unit is also a teaching arm of the University, responsible for developing graduate courses and coaching graduate students, residents and medical/dental fellows through statistical aspects of their thesis or dissertation. The teaching programs of the unit cover courses for graduate credits in the School of Graduate Studies, and student contact on research projects, thesis and dissertation preparation. In addition, there is teaching contact with residents and fellows in the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, both as didactic lectures and as coaching in the analysis of their research projects. The Chair of the Department of Biostatistics reports to the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies. The personnel are faculty and staff, all with primary training in mathematics and statistics above the master's level and frequently trained in a supporting academic discipline such as psychology, engineering, biology or public health.

Biostatistics (sometimes known as biometrics , though a recent development is the use of biometrics to refer to an entirely different field), most generally, is the application of statistics to biology and, most commonly, to medicine . Because research questions in biology and medicine are various, biostatistics has expanded its domain to include any quantitative, not just statistical, models that may be used to answer these questions. Design and analysis of clinical trials is perhaps the most publicly visible application of statistics in medicine Programs in biostatistics are almost exclusively post-baccalaureate (i.e., found in graduate schools). They are most often found in schools of public health, affiliated with schools of medicine, forestry, or agriculture or as a focus of application in departments of statistics. In the United States, several universities have dedicated biostatistics departments; many other top-tier universities integrate Biostatistics faculty into Statistics (or other) departments. However, many universities that deal with ecological research have a biostatistics course that introduces concepts such as
