The discipline of biostatistics applies statistical theory and methodology to the biological sciences. A successful biostatistician is proficient in mathematical statistics, statistical applications and statistical computing. Biostatistics encompasses such diverse applications as
  • modeling animal populations in an ecosystem;
  • designing a sample scheme to evaluate health services;
  • designing and analyzing epidemiological studies and clinical trials;
  • designing and analyzing pharmacological experiments and microorganism assays; and
  • examining health care utilization patterns.

126. Intuitive Biostatistics
Harvey Motulsky, OUP (1995). Site for the book, with online extracts (PDF).
http://www.graphpad.com/www/book/book.htm
Intuitive Biostatistics "The book's title suggests that he can make biostatistics intuitive for non-statisticians (e.g. physicians, clinicians and nurses). After reading through it he has made a believer out of me! He introduces concepts through examples and touches on most of the important statistical methods that are used in the medical literature. ... My usual concern with such books is that concepts are oversimplified and the presentation is too cook-bookish. Amazingly that is not the case here. Motulsky carefully explains concepts such as confidence intervals, p-values, multiple comparison issues, Bayesian thinking and Bayesian controversy in a way that should be understandable to his intended audience."
"I highly recommend this book for those needing a non-mathematical, explanatory introduction to biostatistics. It is well-written and provides wonderful clinical examples and biostatistical content...An excellent resource book for medical students and housestaff who are struggling along with the concepts; and for those of you who were wondering, it was surprisingly easy to read."
"This splendid book meets a major need in public health, medicine, and biomedical research training a user-friendly biostatistics text for non-mathematicians."

Located within the Department of Community Medicine and Health Care , the Division of Biostatistics was created in 1998 as part of the University of Connecticut Health Center's strategic plan. In 2001, the Division merged with the Division of Epidemiology to form the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. The mission of the Division is:
  • To develop new biostatistical methodology of importance for the design and analysis of medical and other health related data. To collaborate on major research projects throughout the Health Center providing statistical expertise on study design and data analysis. To teach epidemiology and biostatistics to medical and dental students, residents, clinical fellows, and master of public health students. To provide ad-hoc statistical consulting and advice on a case-by-case basis.

    Biostatistics and Markov chain Monte Carlo are two of the most vibrant current areas of statistical research. The analysis of experimental data under alternative biological hypotheses in highly complex modeling situations is becoming increasingly commonplace. Models based on genetic and biological applications have traditionally provided a challenge for stochastic simulation techniques due to their complex local dependency structures, and the unique modelling circumstances generated by the experimental design. This symposium will focus on statistical issues in both Biostatistical and MCMC fields. Cross-disciplinary research will also be presented. The Symposium is scheduled immediately before the IWSM2005 Conference , also in Sydney on 10-15 July 2005.

    About the Journal
    Among the important scientific developments of the 20th century is the explosive growth in statistical reasoning and methods for application to studies of human health. Examples include developments in likelihood methods for inference, epidemiologic statistics, clinical trials, survival analysis, and statistical genetics. Substantive problems in public health and biomedical research have fueled the development of statistical methods, which in turn have improved our ability to draw valid inferences from data. The objective of Biostatistics is to advance statistical science and its application to problems of human health and disease, with the ultimate goal of advancing the public's health. Biostatistics publishes papers that develop innovative statistical methods with applications to the understanding of human health and disease, including basic biomedical sciences. Papers should focus on methods and applications. Introduction of original methodology should be grounded in substantive problems; authors also have the opportunity to present extensive analyses of data on the journal's website as supplementary data . Papers submitted for publication in Biostatistics should satisfy at least one of the following criteria:

    We may at once admit that any inference from the particular to the general must be attended with some degree of uncertainty, but this is not the same as to admit that such inference cannot be absolutely rigorous, for the nature and degree of the uncertainty may itself be capable of rigorous expression. Biostatistics provides the essential methodological and quantitative underpinning necessary for much of public health and medical research. Appropriate study design, data collection and analysis are all needed in order to quantify the effect of risk factors and health interventions on individuals or populations. Areas of concentration in the Division are the development and application of methods in statistical genetics and bioinformatics, statistical epidemiology, statistical issues in clinical research including clinical trials, and the geographic information systems.
