The efforts of the department and its divisions focus on the diagnosis and analysis of health issues in large human populations.
Traditionally, medical education focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of individual patients. The disciplines of biostatistics, epidemiology, genetic and molecular epidemiology, and health services research, however, deal with the diagnosis and analysis of health issues in large human populations. The results of human studies in these fields have had an enormous impact on the health related behavior of the American population. One example is the decrease in cigarette smoking and the elimination of cigarette smoking from public buildings in our society. Another visible example is the change in the American diet, away from fat and cholesterol. HIGHLIGHTS

  • Course Home Syllabus Calendar Lectures ... OCW Home CMH110 Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Fall 2004/2005 Selection of types of distributions. (Image adapted by Tufts OCW.) Highlights of this Course This course teaches the basic skills needed to critique the medical literature by providing a fundamental understanding of epidemiology and biostatistics. One highlight of the course is the Small Group Session . The small group format provides one with an excellent opportunity to closely interact with a faculty member by enhancing the concepts taught in the lectures and clarifying questions concerning the lecture material. Course Description The primary purpose of this course is to teach you basic skills to critique the medical literature. As future physicians you have an obligation to remain current in your field of practice and to treat patients according to generally accepted standards of care. To do this well you will need to read those journals that are considered the most important sources of new information impacting on your field of medicine. For example, internal medicine physicians generally read the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) which is published by the Massachusetts Medical Society. Perhaps the most influential medical journal, its articles are widely reviewed by the media. Most surgeons read the Annals of Surgery. In short, each field of medicine has its own specialty journals.

The Center for biostatistics provides researchers a resource to identifycollaborators for grant preparation, assistance creating and maintaining databases
http://www-biostat.med.ohio-state.edu/
Modern research in the biomedical sciences requires a collaborative effort between biomedical investigators and biostatisticians. Such collaboration yields well-designed studies, efficient data management, and the proper interpretation of results. The Center for Biostatistics provides researchers a resource to identify collaborators for grant preparation, assistance creating and maintaining databases of high integrity, analysis of data, development of new methodologies, and assistance with the description, documentation and publication of results. We provide expertise to clinical and basic researchers at The Ohio State University , as well as to researchers in government and private industry, in all aspects of: - Grant proposal development
- Experimental design
- Sample size determination
- Data management
- Statistical analysis
- Development and application of new statistical methodologies
- Manuscript preparation

BIOSTATISTICS (N = 23)
Abramson, J.H. (1994). Making Sense of Data. 2nd Edition. NY: Oxford University Press. A good text for interactive learning courses. Brief explanations are given about major epidemiological concepts that are reinforced by exercises. Answers with explanations are given in following chapters. Really needs a good teacher to make the most of this text. Hard for those who (like me) likes to study concepts in a systematic way. However, does have a good section (at the end) on meta-analytic studies - how to conduct and critique them. Ahlbom, A. (1993). Biostatistics for Epidemiologists. Boca Raton: Lewis Publishers. Good explanations of biostatistical procedures used by epidemiologists: p-value/confidence intervals; incidence/prevalence; crude/stratified analyses; multivariate models; exposure levels; meta-analysis. If you don't like mathematical formulas, skip it. Bell, F.D. (1995). Basic Biostatistics, Concepts for the Health Sciences. The Almost No Math Stats Book.

Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics Brief Mission Statement Units Scholars Leadership The mission of the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (CCEB) of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine is to improve the health of the public by linking epidemiology, biostatistics, and clinical medicine, bringing epidemiologic research methods to clinical research, clinical insight to epidemiologic research, and an understanding of research methodology to clinical medicine. There are two Units within the CCEB: the Clinical Epidemiology Unit and the Biostatistics Unit. Faculty members from both units collaborate closely as co-investigators on research projects requiring selected biostatistics and epidemiology expertise, and as principal investigators on primary research projects. CCEB faculty have primary appointments as Senior Scholars, Associate Scholars, Adjunct Scholars, or Affiliate members. The CCEB serves as the primary research home for the Senior Scholars, who act as core faculty for the CCEB. Senior Scholars look to the CCEB, rather than their primary department, for their primary research support, including space, research computing, secretarial/administrative assistance, current expenses, and financial management. Associate and Adjunct Scholars are affiliated faculty members who have expertise in biostatistics, epidemiology, or a related discipline. Associate Scholars have a primary departmental faculty appointment within Penn, but outside of the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology. Adjunct Scholars have primary appointments outside the University. In order to maintain their appointments with the CCEB, Associate and Adjunct Scholars are expected to participate annually in CCEB educational program and research activities and meet annual service/collaborative requirements. Generally, Associate and Adjunct Scholars do not receive support directly from the CCEB.
