Highlights of this Course This course teaches the basic skills needed to critique the medical literature by providing a fundamental understanding of epidemiology and biostatistics. One highlight of the course is the Small Group Session . The small group format provides one with an excellent opportunity to closely interact with a faculty member by enhancing the concepts taught in the lectures and clarifying questions concerning the lecture material. Course Description The primary purpose of this course is to teach you basic skills to critique the medical literature. As future physicians you have an obligation to remain current in your field of practice and to treat patients according to generally accepted standards of care. To do this well you will need to read those journals that are considered the most important sources of new information impacting on your field of medicine. For example, internal medicine physicians generally read the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) which is published by the Massachusetts Medical Society. Perhaps the most influential medical journal, its articles are widely reviewed by the media. Most surgeons read the Annals of Surgery. In short, each field of medicine has its own specialty journals.

Overview
Biostatistics is a Division within the Department of Health Sciences Research and has had a distinguished history of methodological research and statistical collaboration at Mayo since 1929. The division is staffed by more than 140 statisticians (25 Ph.D., 50 M.S., 70 B.S.) as well as information technology and support staff. The Survey Research Center, founded in 1991, is part of the Division of Biostatistics and facilitates the conduct of surveys for Mayo investigators and also advances the science of survey research through methodological experimentation. Our Work
In addition to general consulting on over 1,000 ongoing investigations, this group provides core statistical support for a number of major projects such as the Mayo Cancer Center and North Central Cancer Treatment Group (NCCTG), the Mayo General Clinical Research Center (GCRC), the Rochester Epidemiology Project, the Alzheimer's Disease Center, and Program Projects such as the Mayo Stroke Center and the Mayo Study of Bone Metabolism in Aging. As a consequence, over half of the Ph.D. statisticians are extramurally supported.

Orlistat gains FDA Advisory Committee approval
Michael Palmer GlaxoSmithKline may have engineered the first Rx-to-OTC switch of a weight-loss drug, and, indeed, orlistat (brand name Alli, pronounced "ally"), if finally approved by the FDA for over-the-counter (OTC) use, will be the only drug for weight loss that is FDA-approved for consumer use without a prescription. ZBI's Dr. Cecilia A. Hale was Glaxo's lead statistician in preparing for the January 23 FDA Advisory Committee meeting that approved orlistat. GSK also assigned Dr. Hale a key role at the Advisory Committee meeting. [Continue] Comments

NCI and HL7 collaborate on clinical data messages
Michael Palmer Language is infinite . . . , but data can't be. And, that's the problem. How many ways can a case report form in a clinical trial ask for an evaluation of a patient's tumor? Pathology, longest dimension, change since last evaluation, location, and on and on. How many ways can that data be represented? Free text, coded text, numerically, as an image, etc., etc. Consider multi-national clinical trials with investigators, patients, and sponsors using multiple languages. Next, automate case report form creation and data transmission. Where are you now? At the eDCIelectronic Data Collection Instrument. [Continue] Comments

Biostatistics involves the theory and application of statistical science to analyze public health problems and to further biomedical research. Current departmental research on statistical and computing methods for observational studies and clinical trials includes survival analysis, missing-data problems, and causal inference. Other areas of investigation are environmental research (methods for longitudinal studies, analyses with incomplete data, and meta-analysis); statistical aspects of the study of AIDS and cancer; quantitative problems in health-risk analysis, technology assessment, and clinical decision making; statistical methodology in psychiatric research and in genetic studies; Bayesian statistics; statistical computing; statistical genetics and computational biology; and collaborative research activities with biomedical scientists in other Harvard-affiliated institutions.

THE OFFICIAL APPLICATION DEADLINE WAS MARCH 7. HOWEVER, WE ARE STILL ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS!!! Please fill out the application form and follow the instructions given there. SIBS will be held June 9 July 18, 2008! Biostatistics is the exciting field that applies statistics to medical and public health research. Biostatisticians work closely with experts from other fields in research teams. Together they seek to answer serious and important questions that affect human health and well being. The demand for biostatisticians TODAY is greater than ever before, and it is expected to INCREASE in the near future. The Summer Institute for Training in Biostatistics (SIBS), sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, is a 6-week program to give undergraduate students majoring in the quantitative sciences the opportunity to explore a career in biostatistics. ( program flyer in pdf format) The Program has been offered in the Summers of 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007. All programs were a great success, and the Summer 2008 program promises to be just as exciting! (
