      Introduction to the BSU
      The MRC Biostatistics Unit, located in Cambridge, was founded over 40 years ago. Its aims are to advance understanding of the cause, natural history and treatment of disease, and to evaluate public health strategies, through the development of statistical methods and their application to the design, analysis and interpretation of biomedical studies.
      More about us
      The Medical Research Council is the UK's largest public organisation dedicated to advancing knowledge in all areas of human health. It consists of a large number of separate units and centres, located across the UK, each with its own area of specialisation. The MRC Biostatistics Unit is based on a dedicated research site, in the University of Cambridge Institute of Public Health , a building shared with other public health groups. Our site is adjacent to Addenbrooke's Hospital, one of the country's largest teaching hospitals, and home to the University Medical School
      About the site
      Our original web site was launched in 1996, and has been totally re-written several times since then. This is our 8th generation site, designed and coded by Alastair Stevens, a member of the BSU's in-house computing team. Please contact our

The discipline of biostatistics applies statistical theory and methodology to the biological sciences. A successful biostatistician is proficient in mathematical statistics, statistical applications and statistical computing. Biostatistics encompasses such diverse applications as
  • modeling animal populations in an ecosystem;
  • designing a sample scheme to evaluate health services;
  • designing and analyzing epidemiological studies and clinical trials;
  • designing and analyzing pharmacological experiments and microorganism assays; and
  • examining health care utilization patterns.

Epidemiology and Biostatistics (EPI)
Epidemiology and Biostatistics is one of the graduate divisions within the GSPH. It offers a Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree program with concentrations in epidemiology or biometry, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with emphasis in epidemiology (offered jointly with the University of California San Diego School of Medicine). Epidemiologists and biostatisticians study the distribution and determinants of health and disease in human populations with the goal of preserving and improving the public's health. Epidemiologists determine the rates of diseases, identify risk factors for diseases, advance and evaluate methods of prevention, and aid in the development of public health programs and policy. Biostatisticians focus on the development and application of statistical methods and models in the fields of public health, medicine, and biology. San Diego and other regions in Southern California provide many opportunities for field applications of epidemiology and biostatistics, including major academic medical centers, a large and progressive County Health Department, military field research units, a thriving biotechnology industry, and a State Border Health office offering international opportunities in Tijuana and Baja California, Mexico.
