Biostatistics Collaboration of Australia
Postgraduate courses in biostatistics The BCA is a consortium of biostatistical experts from around Australia with representatives from universities, government and the pharmaceutical industry who have combined to offer a program of postgraduate courses. Addressing the need for highly skilled biostatisticians in Australia
At present there is an urgent shortage of highly skilled biostatisticians . The BCA delivers a program of postgraduate courses that aims to fill a serious gap between current programs in public health and epidemiology (which train users of biostatistical methods, not professional biostatisticians), and general statistics courses (which do not cater to the increasingly diverse and specialised needs of health research). By combining the best talents from around the country, this collaboration has developed a focused curriculum with a mission to provide Australia with well-trained professional biostatisticians. The courses provide a sound mathematically-based grounding in statistical methods with a strong emphasis on applications in all areas of health and medical research. How and where will I study?

Biostatistics is the application of statistical techniques to scientific research in health-related fields, including medicine, biology, and public health, and the development of new tools to study these areas. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the field of biostatistics has become an indispensable tool in improving health and reducing illness. Biostatisticians play essential roles in designing studies, analyzing data and creating methods to attack research problems as diverse as

Of the eighteen new students, 11 are enrolled in our Ph.D. doctoral program, and 7 in our Master's program. Of these new degree students, 13 are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and 5 are international students. There are 11 women and 7 men, and their prior degrees are distributed as follows (2 with a Ph.D., 9 have at least a prior Master's degree, 7 enter with Bachelor's degrees). The Department welcomes the new students to our program and wishes them every success during their stay with us and beyond. Professor Richard Gelber has been named an award recipient by the Jacqueline Seroussi Memorial Foundation for Cancer Research. The prize, which was awarded for fundamental contributions to the interpretation of clinical trial results leading to better understanding of treatment benefits for breast cancer patients, will be presented to Professor Gelber at a ceremony in Tel Aviv, Israel on December 2, 2005. The award includes financial support for future research. The Department extends its congratulations to Rich for this honor.

... Biostatistics creates and applies methods for quantitative research in the health sciences. Our faculty conduct research across the spectrum of statistical science from foundations of inference to the discovery of new methodology to health applications. Our designs and analytic methods enable health scientists and professionals in academia, government, pharmaceutical companies, medical research organizations and elsewhere to efficiently acquire knowledge and draw valid conclusions from their ever-expanding sources of information. The Department of Biostatistics offers doctoral (PhD) and master of science (ScM) degrees as well as a master of health science (MHS) in biostatistics for students earning a PhD in another department of the School. Our graduates have leadership careers as researchers in academic biostatistics departments, government, and industry.

Examples include developments in likelihood methods for inference, epidemiologic statistics, clinical trials, survival analysis, and statistical genetics. Substantive problems in public health and biomedical research have fueled the development of statistical methods, which in turn have improved our ability to draw valid inferences from data. The objective of Biostatistics is to advance statistical science and its application to problems of human health and disease, with the ultimate goal of advancing the public's health.
