B.S. DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
IN ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS
University Requirements
Completion of the University's Integrative Studies sequences and the First Year Writing course is required for each student. About 26-27 credits are required to satisfy the University requirements. Courses must be completed in each of the following areas: (a) First Year Writing
This course may be completed in the first or second semester, but for astronomy/astrophysics majors the first semester suits scheduling the best, enabling the student to begin Physics, for example, in the second semester of the first year (after a semester of introductory calculus). b Tier II Writing
For Astrophysics majors the Tier II writing requirement is satisfied by completing the senior thesis, which must be taken for two semesters. (c) Integrative Studies in the Social Science
Two semesters or 8 credits are required. Either the sophomore year or the junior year would be suitable. It is also possible to take one 4 credit course each year. (d) Integrative Studies in the Arts and Humanities
Two semesters or 8 credits are required. The junior and senior

Contents of the Programme What is the history of the Universe? How are stars and planetary systems born? What is the origin and physical nature of black holes, and of neutron stars? These are some of the fundamental questions that current astrophysical research focuses on. The Astronomical Institute "Anton Pannekoek" carries out a cutting-edge research programme with two main themes: late stages of stellar evolution and the physics of neutron stars and black holes; and the birth and death of stars and planetary systems. In both areas the institute has a strong international reputation - it hosts astronomers and astrophysicists from more than ten different countries using the most advanced international observing facilities, ground-based (e.g. the Very Large Telescope in Chile) as well as in space (Hubble Space Telescope, X-ray observatories Chandra and XMM Newton etc.). The institute also has excellent computing facilities. The main programme offers basic and advanced courses in astrophysics and related disciplines (physics, mathematics, etc.). Students spend about half the time on their own state-of-the art research project (under close guidance of one of the staff members), which starts in the second half of the first year and includes an observing run at an international observatory. The programme also covers training in scientific writing and presentation. The international atmosphere at the Institute provides a stimulating working environment.

Home Commentary Surveys Research Background ... Site Info The Astrophysics Spectator is a web site about modern astrophysics. Here you will find articles on how astrophysical objects work and on current research efforts to more completely understand the universe. This web site is written for the reader who has some understanding of basic physics, but who is not familiar with the varied phenomena found in our universe. The basic layout of the site is as survey paths, which can be found under the Surveys link at the top of this and most other pages on this site. Each survey begins with a basic overview of the subject. Part of this overview include simulators of astrophysical phenomena that allow the reader to experiment with the phenomena. The later pages in a survey present the subject in greater and more mathematical depth. A path ends with research pages that describe current research projects and results in astrophysics. The links at the top of each page are Home , which is the current home page of this site, Commentary , which is an index of short essays on topics loosely related to astrophysics, Surveys , which is the index of survey paths, Research , which is the index of research pages and the page leading to recent news items, Background , which is the index page for all background information on astrophysics, including survey pages, simulator pages, tables, bibliographic references, and lists of web resources, Previously , which is an index of previous home pages, and

General Programme Information We are unique in the University in offering you the opportunity to study a wide range of subjects from a number of different disciplines. This means you can plan your programme of study to reflect your own developing interests and aspirations. We offer you the choice of 23 different subjects, permitting a selection of over 500 different study combinations. Your degree may be a BA or a BSc, depending on the number of science subjects included in your degree. You are awarded honours degrees which name your main subject, subject combinations, or integrated studies, for example BSc Honours Business Organisations, BA Honours Tourism, BSc Honours Computing with Electronic Music, BSc Honours Applied Economics and Philosophy. The degree programme begins with the equal study of three subjects in the first year. This broad base allows you to get to know your subjects before deciding whether to specialise or to msintain your breadth of study as you enter your second and final years.
