Borgstahl* Department of Chemistry, The University of Toledo, Toledo, Ohio 43606-3390 Received February 2, 2001 Revised Manuscript Received April 27, 2001 Abstract: The human RAD52 protein plays an important role in the earliest stages of chromosomal double-strand break repair via the homologous recombination pathway. Individual subunits of RAD52 associate into seven-membered rings. These rings can form higher order complexes. RAD52 binds to DNA breaks, and recent studies suggest that the higher order self-association of the rings promotes DNA end joining. Monomers of the RAD52(1-192) deletion mutant also associate into ring structures but do not form higher order complexes. The thermal stability of wild-type and mutant RAD52 was studied by differential scanning calorimetry. Three thermal transitions (labeled A, B, and C) were observed with melting temperatures of 38.8, 73.1, and 115.2 C. The RAD52(1-192) mutant had only two thermal transitions at 47.6 and 100.9

Introduction
News Releases Significant Events ... Cassini Shows Saturn Rings in New Detail Cassini scientists studying Saturn's rings have made several new findings that further our knowledge of how this beautiful and dynamic system continues to evolve before our eyes. "Understanding the dynamics of Saturn's rings provides on a miniature scale a better understanding of how our solar system formed from a disk of particles surrounding the Sun," said Dr. Jeff Cuzzi, Cassini interdisciplinary scientist, NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif. Artist's concept showing Saturn's rings and major icy moons.
Cassini's composite infrared spectrometer has found that particles within Saturn's main rings (the A, B, and C rings) are spinning slower than anticipated. This occurs even in areas where particles are so densely packed that they frequently bump into each other and where researchers expected them to spin quicker. From the planet outward, the order of Saturn's rings is D, C, B, A, F, G and E. The rings were assigned a letter in the order they were discovered Scientists determined the spin rate by studying the temperature profiles of the particles. They hypothesized that collisions in the dense A and B rings would have resulted in faster-spinning ring particles that would have a more uniform temperature. Instead, results show that the A and B ring particles spin slowly, just like particles in the sparser C ring.

By Jennifer Kahn Within every tree lies a coded history to its past, and when stitched together with the information found in other trees, this record can span the past 10,000 years. Each year, a tree adds on a new growth ring to its trunk, preserving and reflecting the information about its surrounding climate and environmental conditions based in part on the width of that ring. Prof. Sturt Manning, classics, and Cornell’s Lab of Dendrochronology have been able to use tree-ring chronologies in combination with radiocarbon dating in order to place important events, such as the massive volcanic eruption at Santorini in the late 17th century B.C. Dendrochronology, the study of these barcode-like patterns in wood samples, is able to find overlaps between the patterns in living trees and slightly older ones in order to build chronologies that go back thousands of years.

    Units and Associates
If xy = 1, x is the left inverse of y and y is the right inverse of x. Clearly x and y are nonzero. If x has a left inverse w and a right inverse y they are equal. Write y = 1y = wxy = w(xy) = w1 = w. In this case x is called "invertible", or a "unit". The set of units forms a group under multiplication. If R is the ring, the group of units is denoted R . You've seen this before; Z n is the group of units mod n. Elements x and y are associates if x divides y and y divides x. show that "associate" forms an equivalence relation. Symmetry comes from the definition, and transitivity (x divides y and y divides z implies x divides z) is straightforward. Actually we need to be consistent here. Divides always means left divides, or right divides, as you prefer. Thus cx = y and ky = z, hence kcx = z. We sometimes lump an element and all its associates together. In the integers, 5 and -5 are associates. When factoring 45, we don't spend a lot of time worrying about 5 verses -5. They are essentially the same prime factor; merely associates of each other. Of course 5 does not equal -5, and sometimes the particular associate does matter. If xy =

Taco Bell rings in new age of publicity stunts
    Published on 05/20/1996 under Potpourri
Given the consistently gloomy predictions and play-it-safe pronouncements over the past several years, I had pretty much decided that Corporate America had totally lost its nerve, not to mention its sense of humor. That was, of course, before Taco Bell unloaded its massive April Fools' Day joke on the country. What a coup! What guts! Such creative timing! Frankly, I can't recall a single publicity stunt that accomplished so much positive exposure with so little effort and expense. It serves to remind us all of the cost-effective power of a professionally planned public relations event. Especially one with bold spirit and fearless timing. In case you were out of town, Taco Bell ran ads April 1 in seven major newspapers announcing the purchase of the Liberty Bell in order to help reduce the federal budget deficit. (Never mind that the Liberty Bell is actually owned by the City of Philadelphia.) Full page ads appeared in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Philadelphia and Dallas, plus USA TODAY proudly announcing the Liberty Bell purchase and urging other corporations to do likewise. Ad copy noted that the bell would be renamed the "Taco Liberty Bell" and rotated for public viewing between its traditional home in Philadelphia and Taco Bell's corporate headquarters in Irvine, CA.

Add to del.icio.us RSS Abstract Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr.), referred to throughout as hemlock, is a major or minor associate in many forest types in northeastern North America. Its native range extends from the Canadian Maritime Provinces, where it is a prominent species, westward through southern Quebec and Ontario, southward to the Lake States. It is found throughout New England, New York, Pennsylvania, the Middle Atlantic States, and southward in the Appalachians into Georgia and Alabama (Godman and Lancaster 1990). Hemlock bark was an important source of tannin for the early leather tanning industry. It was estimated that 8 billion board feet of hemlock timber was cut for its bark in Maine alone from 1760 to 1935, when the industry migrated south and west and chemical-tanning agents replaced tanbark (Coolidge 1963). Little of the timber itself was utilized until the mid 19th century and production of hemlock lumber reached its peak between 1890 and 1910 (Godman and Lancaster 1990).
