The Hurdles to the Causal Mathematics Hypothesis
Mentat - The Hurdles to the Causal Mathematics Hypothesis
Back in the old PFs, I made this thread to get rid of an idea that was continually side-tracking threads. I thought it was, for the most part, effective, but it appears that this is not the case. So, I have found the thread on the PF Archive C.D., and reposted it here:
The following are the Hurdles to the Causal Mathematics idea (which is the idea that Mathematics creates the phenomena of the Universe), as posted in PF 2.0:
1) Non-physical Hurdle:
Mathematics has no physical presence (nor does logic, for that matter). You can say that electromagnetism (for example) is causal, because it can exert *physical* force on objects. Mathematics, on the other hand, exists only in the metaphysical (or the realm of concepts).
2) The Dictionary Hurdle:
The American Heritage dictionary of the English Language defines mathematics as:
The study of number, form, arrangement, and associated relationships, using rigorously defined literal, numerical, and operational symbols.
The Webster's Dictionary defines it as:
The logical study of quantity, form, arrangement, and magnitude; especially the methods for disclosing, by the use of rigorously defined concepts and symbols, the properties of quantities and relations.

Day 11
Once again we arrived bright and early for the third week. We headed off to our first class of the week on number theory. Subjects introduced were divisibility and modular arithematic. After lunch we had an exciting game of frisbee. Then we were off to robotics to learn about the topic and a new computer program to help us program our creations, Robolab. Tuesday, July 23
Day 12
It's the third week now. Hey, guess what? After breakfast we had the same teacher as last week, Dr. McNulty, for Number Thoery. Yahoo! - time to play with numbers! For the afternoon session, we started creating our artificial environment for our robots to move around in and we also started programming the robots using Robolab. On Friday we will test our creations.

Appendix C May 13, 1999 The Academic Council met in regular monthly session on May 13, 1999 from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. in 139 Social Science Building with Professor Robert Mosteller (Law) presiding. The unusual hour for the meeting was prompted by the death of [Sr. Vice President] Charles Putman and to enable members to attend the memorial service for him in the Duke Chapel at 4 p.m. The Chair called the meeting to order. He called on President Keohane "to say something about the tragic and untimely death of Charles Putman whom we all miss dearly." Chairman Mosteller: Thank you President Keohane. Thank you all for being here at an unusual time. The service for Dr. Putman will be a 4:00 in the Chapel and I hope that we will finish in plenty of time in order to allow attendance. The minutes for the April meeting are not available because the period was unusually short so they will be approved at the September meeting. Our next meeting will be in September of the next academic year. I will begin now by calling on representatives from the various schools and colleges with respect to [the presentation to the Faculty Secretary of] earned degrees. Analysis Engine ( AE
AE ) is a consumer, which reads measurements from the PDC and PDHA and analyzes the data to diagnose network problems. The process of detection and analysis is signature based. The AE has some predefined knowledge about suspected network problems (signatures). The AE is designed to be extensible, i.e., it is easy to integrate new signatures. The AE is user driven. When users observe some serious network problems, e.g. connectivity or performance, they can activate the AE to detect problems and get relevant solutions.
Interacting with the AE
AE provides the results of analysis to Novice GUI, Map GUI and Expert GUI. The information include: problem description and possible solution. A problem has the following properties:
  • identification : a value which distinguishes this problem from all others name : a short human-readable string which briefly describing the problem (source, destination) : an address pair for end-to-end performance analysis description : a human-readable string describing the reasons, significance, and detection methods for the problem

Hi,
I am working on a project which involves reading lines from a file, one by one, looking for certain patterns in each line, converting the patterns into new ruby code which may use some of the info in the recognized patterns. I think this would be a good application for Ruby's built in regular expression and pattern/substitution abilities. I would greatly appreciate any advice on a nifty way to approach this. I have some examples of what I want to do below:
Input from my source file:
box2_34 = $CUR % ((box2_20 + (box2_21) + box2_22) - (box2_25 + box2_27 + box2_29 + box2_31 + box2_33))
Convert the above to:
box2_34 = $CUR % (box2_20.to_f + box2_21.to_f + box2_22.to_f - (box2_25.to_f + box2_27.to_f + box2_29.to_f + box2_31.to_f + box2_33.to_f))
The above needs to maintain the arithematic integrity of the source line - notice the minus sign. Also, I need to watch for any combination of arithematic operations, with varying numbers of boxes.
