62. Applied Mathematics Program
The applied math program at the University of Illinois is an interdepartmental effort encompassing a broad range of activity and interests.

The biped robot pictured above is the work of
Mark W. Spong
Coordinated Science Laboratory , on passivity based nonlinear control of bipedal locomotion. Results rely on some symmetry properties in Legrangian systems with respect to the group action of SO(3) on the configuration manifold of the biped. His work shows how passivity based control can be used to increase the basin of attraction of the limit cycles and provides robustness to external disturbances and uncertainties. The Applied Math program at the University of Illinois is an interdepartmental effort encompassing a broad range of activity and interests. By coordinating the strengths of a world-class scientific institution, the program seeks to encourage development of the next generation of innovations in applied mathematics. The program sponsors visitors, seminar series, and external collaborations which illuminate novel mathematical phenomena which underpin phenomena in various areas of science and engineering. Interested and strong students should apply to a regular academic department within the university.

More information about faculty and their research interests can be found on the Department Research page. In addition to special topics courses in applied mathematics, a number of foundational courses are offered. For a list of such courses, consult the graduate catalog . Meeting on a regular basis are seminars in Applied Mathematics, Combinatorics, Geometry and Topology, and Probability and Statistics. Many colloquia are given by visiting applied mathematicians and are often joint with the Department of Biology and the School of Marine Sciences. There is a great deal of interaction with these departments as well as with the School of Engineering. A View of Hypersphere Questions or Comments to: webmaster@math.miami.edu

The concentration requires nine courses of which four are core courses and five are advanced courses. In addition, students must satisfy the upper-level writing requirement.
Foundational Course Requirement The following foundational courses must be completed before acceptance into the concentration:
  • MTH . Analysis I MTH . Analysis II MTH . Multidimensional Analysis MTH . Linear Algebra with Differential Equations PHY 121. Mechanics PHY 122. Electricity and Magnetism

Equivalent courses may be substituted for the above. For example any of the mathematics honors courses MTH , and may be substituted for the equivalent MTH , and courses and MTH may be substituted for MTH . The sequence MTH may be substituted for the sequence MTH . Credit granted for AP courses may be used to satisfy foundational requirements.
Core Course Requirement Students must complete the following four courses. An Honors version of a course can always be substituted for the listed course.
