There is no consensus of what the various branches of applied mathematics are. Such categorizations are made difficult by the way mathematics and science change over time, and also by the way universities organize departments, courses, and degrees. Historically, applied mathematics consisted principally of applied analysis , most notably differential equations approximation theory (broadly construed, to include representations asymptotic methods, variational methods , and numerical analysis ), and applied probability . These areas of mathematics were intimately tied to the development of Newtonian Physics , and in fact the distinction between mathematicians and physicists was not sharply drawn before the mid-19th century. This history left a legacy as well; until the early 20th century subjects such as classical mechanics were often taught in applied mathematics departments at American universities rather than in physics departments, and

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 80% of the fastest-growing jobs in the United States require some training after high school. Many of these jobs require a strong basis in math and science. Mathematics engages critical thinking, abstract reasoning, and problem solving. Individuals can use these skills throughout their lifetime for higher learning and many different careers. The WorkKeys Applied Mathematics assessment helps current and potential employees measure the math skills they have against those the workplace requires. This assessment measures the skill people use when they apply mathematical reasoning, critical thinking, and problem-solving techniques to work-related problems. The test questions require the examinee to set up and solve the types of problems and do the types of calculations that actually occur in the workplace. This test is designed to be taken with a calculator. A formula sheet that includes all formulas required for the assessment is provided. While individuals may use calculators and conversion tables to help with the problems, they still need to use math skills to think them through.

Welcome to CAM!
The Center for Applied Mathematics (CAM) administers the graduate Field of Applied Mathematics. Graduate education is a vital function at Cornell University. From the student's point of view, the Applied Mathematics graduate program offers not only the opportunity to work at a major university, but flexibility and accommodation to individual needs and interests. Applied Mathematics is one of the most diverse graduate fields; the range of possibilities of graduate research encompasses the areas of specialization of all the faculty members in the field, who currently number more than eighty. As a Cornell graduate student in applied mathematics, you will find a culture of respect and trust and a collegial atmosphere in which to study and that encourages you to excel. To apply to our program, see details here

Welcome to the Department of Applied Mathematics
The Department of Applied Mathematics is steeped in strategies giving students three core advantages. These are: communications skills, computational skills and mathematical skills. Along with these core skills, the department strives to train and educate its students in the tools, methods and strategies of solving real world problems. We believe that history shows that the question is not whether mathematics will be applied, the real question is when and where! Ride the Applied Math Wave After celebrating 100 successful years at CU this past year, the Department of Applied Mathematics is continuing to make waves! During the spring semester of 2008, the department will offer two courses on theory and experiments of waves. The department has several faculty members who have made significant contributions in this area - one that has great social impact. We believe that an emphasis on exciting and focused studies such as these wave courses helps students to further explore their interests in applied mathematics and potentially make their own important contributions. Such exploration is further facilitated by established research and funding opportunities including the NSF-funded Mentoring Through Critical Transitions Points departmental grant. The department is poised to execute its mission and obtain its vision throughout the next outstanding century. Ride the wave!

Information
For the past few years I have been working on an open source textbook. It contains material on calculus, functions of a complex variable, ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations and the calculus of variations. The text is still under development, but I believe that the current version will be useful for students and instructors. I am trying to distribute the text to as wide an audience as possible, so please tell all your friends and link to my main page By ``open source'' I mean that all of the source used in the creation of the text is available for download. The L A T E X source which comprises the text, the Mathematica notebooks and xfig files used to make the graphics, etc. are all available. I hope this will save instructors time, as they will be able to cut and paste portions of the text to make problem sets, solution sets and handouts.
