CALCULUS (and Analytic Geometry)
(A math-freak's rap)
Refrain: CAL-culus, and Analytic...Geometry! CAL-culus, and Analytic...Geometry! I go to math every single day, And what do I hear the Professor say? "Slope of the line, differ-en-ti-al, "Area under curve is the inte-gral." (Refrain) You learn your tricks, And you learn your rules, But the integrals then make you seem LIKE FOOLS! (choral shout) Substitute with trig; integrate by parts, This is where the math-e-matics really starts! (Refrain) (Instrumental jam, as with harpsichord synth voice to evoke the time of Newton and Leibniz) You draw your conic sections on the x-y plane, But try to work them out, it's a great BIG PAIN! Parabola, Hyperbola, Circle, Ellipse, You gotta have 'em all at your finger-tips! (Refrain to fade)

Conic Sections
Conic sections are curves formed by the intersection of a plane with the surface of a cone. (When discussing conic sections, cone means two right circular cones placed apex to apex.) The surface of the cone on either side of the apex is called a nappe of the cone. If A is the angle between the axis of the cone and its surface and the cone is cut by a plane that makes an angle with the axis that is greater than A, the intersection is a closed curve called an ellipse . If the plane and the axis are perpendicular, the intersection is a

Analytic Geometry Final Exam (Final Exam for Math 142) Deadline date: Friday December 16 Material covered : sections 8.1-3, 9.1-5, and 9.7 Format : The exam is an online exam, similar to the unit exams. You will have two hours to complete the exam, and it counts 75 points toward your final grade. There are 32 questions, each worth 1, 2, or 3 points. The exam is closed book and closed notes, and you will not be provided with any formulas. You should arrange with your proctor to take the exam by the deadline date above. You may take the exam earlier if you wish. Be sure to arrange for a two hour block of time. At the end of the exam, you will be able to see your score, but you will not be able to immediately view the individual questions to see which ones you missed. However, after the deadline date is passed, you will be able to go back and look over your exam in detail. Unlike the unit exams, you are only allowed to take the Analytic Geometry Final Exam twice
Review material
: The chapter reviews are a good way to start reviewing the material. Reread any sections which seem fuzzy to you. After that, you should do lots of problems from all of the material covered. Some sources of problems are:

AMS Special Session:
Computational Algebraic and Analytic Geometry
for Low-dimensional Varieties
Baltimore, January 2003
Organized by (Florida State University) and Emil Volcheck (National Security Agency). This special session will be held Thursday and Friday, 16-17 January 2003, at the Baltimore Joint Mathematics Meetings . This is the third special session on this topic to be held at the AMS/MAA Joint Mathematics Meetings. The first special session was held in 1999 at the San Antonio Joint Meetings, and the second special session was held in 2001 at the New Orleans Joint Meetings.
Scope
This session is devoted to algorithms and computational techniques for algebraic curves, Riemann surfaces, algebraic surfaces, and low-dimensional varieties. We are interested in reports on algorithms to solve problems or on a significant use of computational algebraic or analytic techniques to obtain results. Algorithmic, algebraic, arithmetic, and analytic aspects of curves and surfaces are appropriate topics. Read the list of speakers and their abstracts for the special sessions in and on computational algebraic geometry for curves and surfaces to see what previous speakers in this series of special sessions have presented.

I just got cancelled a stupid agreement I signed long ago with a publisher. This means that my book will soon be available as an "OpenContent Book", i.e. that you can get the source file for free and do whatever you like with it on the web (print it, spread it, modify it, etc...) except claiming that you are the author! At the moment, it is still not completely achieved and the TeX file is not polished enough. Instead, here is a (compressed) PostScript file of the current version: agbook.ps.gz
