I am a graduate student in Mathematics at University of Pisa. I like traveling, the mountains and riding my motorbike. My field of interest is Algebraic Number Theory. In particular, I am interested in the structure of the ideal class groups for cyclotomic fields, and the K-theory of the rings of integers of an abelian number field.

Subject Knowledge
Aims
This module studies the links between algebra and number theory, and begins with the concept of factorisation. Building on the well known fact that every positive integer can be uniquely written as a product of primes, we investigate number systems where the elements also have this unique factorisation property. This is then applied to find the solutions of Diophantine equations. We then investigate number systems which do not have unique factorisation; this naturally leads on to the study of unique factorisation of ideals and Dedekind domains. The module ends by studying other connections between algebra and number theory, such as quadratic residues and their application to congruence equations.
Learning Outcomes
Students should be able to understand the connections between algebra and number theory through the concept of irreducibility of rings of integers, be able to investigate properties of unique factorisation and solve Diophantine equations, appreciate where unique factorisation of elements does not exist, find unique factorisation of ideals in a Dedekind domain and know that the ring of integers of a number field is a Dedekind domain.

My specialty is algebraic number theory and arithmetic geometry. More specifically, I apply cohomological tools to study the arithmetic properties of number fields. One topic I am studying is the universal norm distributions, which appears quite often in the theory of cyclotomic fields, elliptic curves and modular curves. I determined the group cohomology of some universal norm distributions and used the results to study the Kolyvagin recursions in Euler systems. The other topic I am studying is about the Mordell-Weil group and Selmer group of an abelian variety in number fields, in particular, in a tower of unramified extensions. I am also participating activities in the

Summary
This seminar on number-theoretical algorithms and their applications was the fifth on this topic at Dagstuhl over a period of more than 10 years. This time we attracted a record number of 54 participants from 14 countries. One of the major goals of these seminars has been to broaden interactions between number theory and other areas. For instance, there has been an effort to bring together people developing the theory of efficient algorithms with people actually writing software. There has also been continuing interest in cryptography, and almost a third of the talks were on algebraic curves, most with an eye to applications in cryptography. Since elliptic curves in cryptography seem to be mainly objects of hardware implementations, nowadays, the focus is on higher genus curves and related more sophisticated mathematical objects. This time we also had a major new topic: algorithmic K-theory which has been rapidly developing over the last few years. Not surprisingly seven talks were given on this subject, several alone on (algorithmic aspects of) logarithmic class groups.

Algebraic Number Theory
Many questions initially related to integers can be extended to larger domains, namely, to algebraic number fields . Particularly interesting are such fundamental concepts as the unit group, the discriminant and the class number, which all depend on the arithmetical structure of the field. Deep algebraic methods are used in the study of these concepts. Algebraic number theory is by no means based solely on algebra. For example, L-functions , which carry valuable information about many invariants associated to number fields, create a strong link to analysis. In addition, the theory of elliptic curves has proved to be immensely useful in many difficult problems concerning algebraic number fields. The research of our group is concentrated on theoretical and computational questions on Abelian fields , which are Galois extensions of the field of rationals whose Galois group is commutative. The arithmetic of such fields is closely related to p-adic L-functions. We have investigated many questions related to these functions, such as the location of zeros. Moreover, we have worked on Iwasawa theory , whose roots are in certain infinite Abelian extensions, the canonical example of which is the extension generated by all roots of unity of order p n , where p is a fixed prime.

Each of these four tests will account for 20% of the final grade. The remaining 20% of the grade will be determined by homework. Exam policy: There will be no makeup tests or quizzes. A missed test can only be excused before the day of the test, and you will need a good reason with proof. When a missed test is excused, the grade of the test will be the same as the grade on your final. A missed test will not be excused on or after the day of the test, and a non-excused missed test means zero points. Course objectives: Rings of integers of number fields. Unique factorization of ideals in Dedekind domains. The group of units of the ring of integers. The class group. Valuations. Local fields.
