Graduate Study in Analysis
Introduction
Analysis is that part of mathematics that traces its origins back to calculus and the early efforts to understand physical processes. Because it is a very old area of study, analysis today is diversified but yet unified by its origins. The diversity and unity of analysis are both present at Illinois. What follows is a brief survey of the main areas of analysis that are actively pursued here.
Complex Analysis
Research in complex analysis at Illinois encompasses a broad range of interests. A common thread running through much of the research is the interaction between complex analysis and other areas of mathematics. For example, functional analysis is combined with complex analysis in the study of certain vector spaces whose elements are analytic functions. Other examples include the study of properties of analytic solutions of differential equations, the application of probabilistic methods to the study of analytic functions, and the investigation of the interplay between logic and complex analysis. Additional areas of research interest include Riemann surfaces, value distribution theory and functions of several complex variables.
Dynamical Systems
Dynamics is the study of processes that evolve in time. A differentiable dynamical system arises as the differentiable action of a Lie group on a manifold. Here a Lie group G acts on a manifold X as a homomorphism of G into the group of diffeomorphisms of X. In case G =

Quantization in abstract harmonic analysis
by
Matthias Neufang
Carleton University, Ottawa Our aim is to give an overview of our recent contributions to various aspects of 'quantization' in abstract harmonic analysis - where this (very fashionable) word has two meanings for us:

    1. the use of operator space theory in the study of classical objects in harmonic analysis;
    2. the investigation of non-commutative counterparts of these objects arising through the replacement of functions by operators.
We shall illustrate this programme by discussing the following topics (throughout, G denotes a locally compact group).
Amenability theory Z.-J. Ruan showed that the canonical operator space structure of the Fourier algebra A G ) is crucial for understanding its amenability properties - by proving that A G ) is operator amenable if and only if the group G p G ), for p

Harmonic analysis is the branch of mathematics which studies the representation of functions or signals as the superposition of basic waves. It investigates and generalizes the notions of Fourier series and Fourier transform s. The basic waves are called " harmonic s", hence the name "harmonic analysis." In the past two centuries, it has become a vast subject with applications in areas as diverse as signal processing, quantum mechanics, and neuroscience. The classical Fourier transform on R n is still an area of ongoing research, particularly concerning Fourier transformation on more general objects such as tempered distribution s. For instance, if we impose some requirements on a distribution f, we can attempt to translate these requirements in terms of the Fourier transform of f. The Paley-Wiener theorem is an example of this. The Paley-Wiener theorem immediately implies that if f is a nonzero

This is a very elementary form of an

http://www.maths.ex.ac.uk/official/modules04/MAS3041.html
MODULE CODE MODULE LEVEL MODULE TITLE Harmonic Analysis LECTURER(S) unassigned CREDIT VALUE ECTS VALUE 7.5 credits PREREQUISITES MAS2006 and MAS2010 (or equivalent) COREQUISITES none DURATION OF MODULE 11 weeks (not available in 2004-5) TOTAL STUDENT STUDY TIME
Overall the module is expected to involve students in approximately 150 hours of learning, including formal contact, personal study, coursework and assessment. The total formal contact is 33 hours of lectures or example classes. DESCRIPTION
This module gives an introduction to Harmonic Analysis. The case of Fourier series and Fourier transformation on the reals serves as a starting point to the general theory of locally compact groups centering around the Plancherel Theorem and the Pontryagin duality for Abelian groups. AIMS
The module will round up the students' knowledge of analysis by introducing powerful methods based on the group structure of the real numbers. INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES
Subject knowledge and skills: Students will learn to handle Fourier series and transforms and they will realize that both are special cases of a general theory. They will understand how group theoretical methods can simplify problems in analysis.
Core academic skills: Students will be given a set of new methods for analytical problems. They will be able to attack analytical questions via Fourier Analysis.

We show that the range of the analysis operator can be determined by computing which characters appear in the representation. This allows one to compare the ranges of two such frames, which is useful for determining similarity and also for multiplexing schemes. Our results then partially extend to Bessel sequences arising from the action of the group. We apply the results to sampling on bandlimited functions and to wavelet and Weyl-Heisenberg frames. This yields a sufficient condition for two sampling transforms to have orthogonal ranges, and two analysis operators for wavelet and Weyl-Heisenberg frames to have orthogonal ranges. The sufficient condition is easy to compute in terms of the periodization of the Fourier transform of the frame generators.
