Innovations in Teaching Abstract Algebra
edited by Allen C. Hibbard and Ellen J. Maycock
Reviewed by Andrew B. Perry
Presenting the fundamentals of abstract algebra to a typical class of undergraduates is easy; making them understand the subject, however, is another matter. While there is no magic formula for teaching abstract algebra, there are many tricks of the trade, and many innovations that have only been explored in the last decade or two. Innovations in Teaching Abstract Algebra is a veritable treasure trove of valuable ideas and should prove a useful resource for both novice and experienced mathematics teachers. The book consists of eighteen articles, written primarily by individuals, averaging about five to ten pages in length. The articles are grouped into three sections: "Engaging Students in Abstract Algebra", "Using Software to Approach Abstract Algebra", and "Learning Algebra Through Applications and Problem Solving". Most articles don't fit neatly into any of the categories, though, as all of the authors are naturally eager to share whatever of value that they have discovered. The authors in the "Engaging Students" section tend to embrace the "active learning" teaching philosophy that has become popular recently, but the section could have been titled "General Advice". Not that any of the papers are dull or generic: this reviewer found each of the eighteen papers at least somewhat interesting and worthwhile.

Students with a grade of H1 in 620-142 or [05]620-192 will be permitted to enrol on completion of additional reading. Semester (view timetable) Contact 36 lectures (three per week) and 11 tutorial/practice class hours (one per week) Subject Description This subject develops the theory of linear algebra, building on material in earlier subjects and providing both a basis for later mathematics studies and an introduction to topics which have important applications in science and technology. It also introduces the theory of groups, which is at the core of modern algebra, and which has applications in many parts of mathematics and in theoretical physics. Linear algebra topics include revision and extension of basic concepts; vector spaces including complex spaces, inner products, linear transformations, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, dual spaces and the connection with inner products; the spectral theorem for normal matrices; and Jordan normal form, without proof but with applications. Groups topics include abstract groups, examples including matrix groups and permutation groups; homomorphisms, normal subgroups, quotients and the first homomorphism theorem; group actions and permutation groups; and conjugacy classes and their interpretation in symmetry groups, permutation groups and matrix groups. Applications topics may include wallpaper groups, symmetry groups of regular polyhedra, and permutation groups.

    Module Description
The first half of the module continues the rigourous reconstruction of the theory of the real numbers begun in MAT-10016. A key theme is the elimination of reference to infinite and infinitesimal quantities, which underlies the na¯ve treatment of calculus students have seen at A-level. The course lays stress on the notion of a function as a mathematical object in its own right, rather than merely as an algebraic expression involving numbers. The second half of the module is based on the idea of mathematical abstraction. The formal definition of a group is motivated by many examples familiar from students’ previous study. The elementary theory of groups and homomorphisms is developed rigourously from the formal definition. This is then applied to number theory, a topic new to students.

Abstract Algebra
There are many texts in abstract algebra: see your university bookstore. If you can tolerate a very dry presentation style, a standard reference book on abstract algebra, both comprehensive and reasonably readable, is:
  • Hungerford, Thomas A. (1974) Algebra, Springer-Verlag, New York.
If you find algebra books rough going, you might first read
  • chapter 10 of Daniel Fendel and Diane Resek (1990) Foundations of Higher Mathematics: Exploration and Proof, Addision-Wesley, Reading MA.
  • Armstrong, M.A. (1988) Groups and Symmetry, Springer-Verlag, New York.

1. INSPIRATION AND DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT Having taught mathematics for nearly ten years in the liberal arts environment, I have come to the conclusion that students perform best when:
  • They feel that their professor cares about them and believes that they can be successful They are comfortable discussing their ideas or questions They are involved in active learning They work with each other in an environment that is supportive and responsive The material that they are studying is put into a context that is relevant to their lives
This kind of environment helps to promote enthusiasm, confidence, collegiality and personal growth. My personal observations were confirmed by a recent report [1] of the Mathematical Association of America. A page summarizing the findings of the task force involved in producing this NSF funded report, is appended at the end of this report. All participants were asked to sign an honor code about their conduct through weekend and I am happy to say that their behavior for the entire weekend was exemplary. We traveled to the retreat location in four cars that were driven by three students and myself. During our first evening, we scheduled our weekend. It turned out that after several weeks of preparation we had to accommodate seven different student presentations. Four of the seven presentations involved two or more students and the other three were single presentations. A detailed description of the program, as well as abstracts of the student presentations (prepared by the students) are included in this report. In addition to the presentations, we cooked some great dinners, watched movies, watched the sunset, played frisbee, and got to know each other very well.

INSTRUCTORS STUDENTS TITLE INFORMATION Description Table of Contents Detailed Contents New to This Edition Hallmark Features Description This revision of Dummit and Foote's widely acclaimed introduction to abstract algebra helps students experience the power and beauty that develops from the rich interplay between different areas of mathematics. The book carefully develops the theory of different algebraic structures, beginning from basic definitions to some in-depth results, using numerous examples and exercises to aid the student's understanding. With this approach, students gain an appreciation for how mathematical structures and their interplay lead to powerful results and insights in a number of different settings. The text is designed for a full-year introduction to abstract algebra at the advanced undergraduate or graduate level, but contains substantially more material than would normally be covered in one year. Portions of the book may also be used for various one-semester topics courses in advanced algebra, each of which would provide a solid background for a follow-up course delving more deeply into one of many possible areas: algebraic number theory, algebraic topology, algebraic geometry, representation theory, Lie groups, etc.
