A GUIDE TO HUMANISTIC PSYCHOLOGY. transpersonal psychology. transpersonal psychology started off within humanistic psychology, and then became more distinct
http://www.ahpweb.org/rowan_bibliography/chapter14.html
TRANSPERSONAL PSYCHOLOGY Transpersonal psychology started off within humanistic psychology, and then became more distinct, with its own separate journals and conferences. So here we have something which goes beyond the borders of humanistic psychology. Yet if we look at a map of the transpersonal, such as the one given to us by Ken Wilber (see Figure 1), we can see that it overlaps with the humanistic. So there is still a strong connection, such that for example Frances Vaughan, a star of the Association for Transpersonal Psychology, could be elected President of the Association for Humanistic Psychology. Transpersonal experiences involve an expansion or extension of consciousness beyond the usual ego boundaries and beyond the limitations of time and space. Maslow talked about peak experiences, and these form a good entrance point for understanding the transpersonal. It is very important, however, not to fall into the one-two-three-infinity theory of the transpersonal, where we say that one is the body, two is the emotions, three is the intellect, and everything beyond that is one great mish- mash called "the transpersonal". As the chart demonstrates, there is more than one realm within the transpersonal, and these distinctions are quite essential if we are not to misunderstand our own experience. Progression from one level to the next is not easy, because it is, as Wilber has emphasised, a dialectical process involving the negating of the previous phase. Many of us have had the experience of seeing the mental ego, with all its rules and roles, as quite ugly and wrong, when we first came into the stage of authenticity. And just in a similar way, we have to renounce the sense of a separate self with clear boundaries when we move on to the stage of the Subtle self or soul. This is a rich realm, full of symbols and myths, archetypes and visions, multiplicity and imagination. This is where we get in touch with the higher self, the deeper self, the transpersonal self, as Assagioli called it.

Psychodynamic Transpersonal Transpersonal psychology is a school of psychology that studies transcendent or spiritual dimensions of humanity. Transpersonal psychology considers such issues as self-development, peak experiences, mystical experiences and the possibility of development beyond traditional ego-boundaries. A short definition from the Journal of Transpersonal Psychology suggests that transpersonal psychology is concerned with the study of humanity’s highest potential, and with the recognition, understanding, and realization of unitive, spiritual, and transcendent states of consciousness (Lajoie and Shapiro, 1992:91). The field is considered by proponents to be the "fourth force"' in the field of psychology, the three other fields being psychoanalysis behaviorism , and humanism . According to transpersonal theory these other schools of psychology have failed to give weight to transpersonal or "transegoic" elements of human existence, such as religious conversion altered states of consciousness and spirituality , in their academic reflection. Thus, transpersonal psychology strives to combine insights from modern psychology with insights from the world's contemplative traditions, both East and West. The transpersonal and spiritual dimensions of the psyche has traditionally not been a focus of interest for Western psychology, which has mainly focused on the prepersonal and personal aspects of the human psyche (Miller, 1998).

BPS TRANSPERSONAL PSYCHOLOGY SECTION Welcome to the The British Psychological Society's Transpersonal Psychology Section website. The word transpersonal means beyond (or through) the personal. It refers to experiences in which there is an expansion beyond our ordinary sense of self and a feeling of connection to a larger, more meaningful reality. Religious or spiritual experience is often seen as central to the transpersonal agenda, although the transpersonal can also be about extending our concern for (or our sense of identification with) other people, humankind, life, the planet, or nature. The BPS Transpersonal Psychology Section was established in 1996. It provides a forum for members who share an interest in psychological research and perspectives on the transpersonal. Membership includes subscription to the section journal (the Transpersonal Psychology Review ) which is generally published two times a year. The section holds an annual conference in September and organises other events and activities. The section also seeks to develop and maintain links, both nationally and internationally, with other scientific bodies concerned with transpersonal psychology, and to mobilise psychological expertise to cope with the exponential growth of lay interest in transpersonal issues.

"People with incredibly positive views of themselves feel anybody who differs from them is an insult," explains Emler. "They just don't like people who are different." Transpersonal psychology
Transpersonal psychology is a school of psychology , considered by proponents to be the 'fourth force' in the field (after the first three: psychoanalysis behaviorism , and humanism ). It was originally founded in by Abraham Maslow Stanislav Grof , Anthony Sutich and others in order to pursue knowledge about issues connected to mystical and transcendent experiences. A major motivating factor behind the initiative to establish this school of psychology was Abraham Maslow 's already published work regarding human peak experiences. It was Grof who coined the term "transpersonal psychology," which refers to the psychological study of experiences which transcend the traditional boundaries of the ego i.e. which are 'trans-personal,' or 'transegoic.' religious conversion altered states of consciousness and spirituality . Thus, transpersonal psychology strives to combine insights from modern psychology with insights from the worlds contemplative traditions, both east and west. Maslow, Sutich, Grof and others, were the initiators behind the publication of the first issue of the Journal of Transpersonal Psychology in 1969, the leading academic journal in the field. This was soon to be followed by the founding of the Association for Transpersonal Psychology (ATP) in 1972. Today transpersonal psychology also includes approaches to health, social sciences and practical arts. Transpersonal perspectives are also being applied to such diverse fields as psychology, psychiatry, anthropology, sociology, medicine and business, education and ecology.
