I have been selective in what is included, and my selection criteria are not always cleareven to me! In general, however, I have included sites which are relevant to the integration of both psychology and spirituality, but not sites that deal with only one or the other. These sites are also connected to other work that is central and recognized within the growing field of transpersonal psychology. Needless to say, there are many, many other sites on the Web that are good, useful, and relevant to transpersonal psychology. Transpersonal Psychology
Among Western modern schools of psychology including psychotherapy (before the advent of NLP Transpersonal Psychology is the most interesting and promising. Three prominent transpersonal psychologists are Ken Wilber Charles Tart and Stanislav Grof The contribution and limitation of each of these transpersonal psychologists are summarised below in a very brief way: Ken Wilber Wilber 's introduction (or integration) of Eastern esoteric wisdom (above all, Vedanta' s model of the "five sheaths (=levels of consciousness)") into Western psychology is to be highly appreciated. His exposition of the spectrum of consciousness helps Western people to understand Eastern esotericism in a quite logical way. The basic concepts of his own model are not new in the strict sense of the word, but the very core of the long traditional Eastern wisdom. In the author's opinion, Wilber 's "The Atman's Project" is the first authentic (successful) attempt in the West to expound what enlightenment (or the Brahman/Atman identity ) is, in a purely logical way, i.e., an attempt to logically explain away what is beyond logic. European Transpersonal Psychology Association
1. Definition
ETPA is a European Association constituted by National Transpersonal Associations and by practitioner psychologists and psychiatrists for the study, teaching and research of transpersonal psychology and psychotherapy in the integral perspective.
Transpersonal psychology extends psychological research to optimal mental health, consciousness and its non-ordinary states, and unexplored human potentialities, such as will, values, creativity, etc. A fundamental purpose is to develop an integral psychology, based on planetary rather than egocentric needs, and encompassing the entire spectrum of human experiences, the psychopathological, the existential and the spiritual ones.
Transpersonal psychotherapy is characterised by combining the methods and principles of Western psychology with the disciplines of awareness and transformation witnessed by the meditative path. In addition to ordinary psychopathology, it addresses the spiritual crises and the suffering of the psychopathology of normality. The concept of healing includes conciousness modification and spiritual awakening.

State of the Art in Transpersonal Psychology, 1996 Charles T. Tart [Presented as part of a panel discussion at the annual meeting of the Association for Transpersonal Psychology, Asilomar California, August 2, 1996.] Abstract [none] Article To help us see what the state of the art in our field is at this time, I want to look at two extremes that clarify where we've been and where we want to go. At the lower extreme, when I went to graduate school in the early 60s, there simply was no Transpersonal Psychology. Behaviorism and psychopathology, Maslow's the first and second forces, were still dominant in psychology and the third force, humanistic, had not yet come along. I had always had an interest in things psychic and spiritual, but the closest areas I could find in orthodox psychology were the study of hypnosis and the study of dreams. Hypnosis was not really quite respectable, although the work of prominent psychologists like Ernest Hilgard at Stanford was starting to make it so. Dreams suddenly became "real" when it was discovered they occurred in conjunction with real physiological changes, brain wave changes. Given the materialistic bias of the times (still too much with us), experience was not "real" until it had a physiological substrate, so the EEG correlates legitimatized the study of dreams, even in their psychological aspects. As to things like mystical experiences, if they were mentioned at all, which was rare, they were relegated to the fringes of psychiatry as being undoubtedly schizophrenic in nature and just showed how sick religions were to be associated with superstitious nonsense like that.
