We'll spend a lot of time talking about hearing and vision, not only because they are the most important and vital of the senses, but because there has been much more research in those areas. We will examine these senses from both an experimental and a physiological point of view. Lecture Class periods will be spent not only lecturing about the most important aspects of each chapter in the book, but hopefully giving you some ideas about current work going on in the field, especially in vision, as well as a number of demonstrations to illustrate points made in class and in the book.

Resources for Teaching Perception
A wealth of material is available for teaching sensation and perception sometimes in the unlikeliest of places. You should acquire the habit of scanning predictable places, including journals such as Behavior Research Methods, Instruments, and Computers Scientific American , and Teaching of Psychology . You will often find articles in these journals that describe clever demonstrations or teaching strategies. But keep your eyes (and ears) open. We've found great demonstrations in advertisements (e.g., the Batman logo provides a wonderful figure-ground illusion can you see an open mouth with rounded teeth?), television programs, puzzle books, etc. For example, the Edmund Scientific catalog displays a wealth of optics products that can be used for demonstrations. Several relevant and interesting programs have appeared on PBS over the past few years. Some of these are available from PBS in videocassette, and we have listed them below. We have arranged the resources according to the relevant chapter from the text. However, keep in mind that many of the resources are useful in making points about topics in several chapters particularly some of the computer programs.
If you come across a particularly good resource that we don't mention here, or if you simply want to pass along some information about the textbook, please contact

To Top This course examines how the human senses transform stimulus patterns of physical energy into the neural codes that become our perceptions of the world. Topics include: vision, audition, smell, taste, touch, balance; and phenomena common to all sensory modalities: feature enhancement, inhibition, adaptation, and stages of neural coding. Prerequisite: Demonstrated knowledge of basic psychology, or completion of an undergraduate course in psychology.

98. Sensation & Perception Lecture Notes - E. Pritchard
perception is not sensation. perception is sensation plus interpretation. The interpretation is done in the Gestalt psychology. Are illusions illusions?
http://io.uwinnipeg.ca/~epritch1/sensperc.htm
SENSATION
Seeing Colour Light is energy, specifically electromagnetic energy. The human eye is, essentially, an energy detector. The eye can distinguish between some types of electromagnetic energy. Those distinctions are seen as colours. In fact, we see only a small portion of all of the electromagnetic energy that exists. X-rays, radar and radio waves are also types of electromagnetic energy, but our eyes are not sensitive to any of those types. Colours can be described by three dimensions:
  • HUE the qualitative experience of colour, corresponding to the physical dimension of wavelength
  • SATURATION psychological dimension of purity or vividness
  • BRIGHTNESS the intensity of light Colours seen in objects are the wavelengths that the object does NOT absorb. White looks white, because it absorbs no colours, and reflects all colours. Black looks black, because it absorbs all colours, and reflects none. Green looks green, because it absorbs all colours but green, which it reflects. Colour blindness is the inability to distinguish colours. This inability is linked to the X sex chromosome, so males are more likely to be colour blind than females (10% of population v. 0.5%). The most common colour blindness is red-green, which means that people have difficulty distinguishing red and green things, especially at weak saturations. More rare are cases of blue-yellow colour blindness, and a total absence of colour perception - only brightness detection.
