Term I, THURSDAY 3-5 pm (Room 290 Yorkon)
Course coordinator: Johannes M. Zanker (Room 218, j.zanker@rhul.ac.uk) Aims:
To introduce the major concepts of low-level sensory information processing and its relation to cognitive psychology: sensation, perception, motor control, and attention.
Learning outcomes:
As the result of successfully completing the course, students will:
  • understand the basic conceptual framework and some essential methods of studying the human sensory systems and their relation to cognitive psychology; be able to describe several mechanisms of sensation, perception, and action be able to relate perceptual mechanisms to cortical structure and function, which will be covered by PS 2061 in more detail have gained an overview over the initial steps of information processing in the human brain as a basis of higher mental processing stages which are covered in PS 1021 and PS 2021

How the brain controls behavior and, conversely, how behavior and environment influence the brain’s structure and functioning are the focus of this program. With Dr. Michael Meaney of McGill University and Dr. Russell Fernald of Stanford University. Updated. (Broadband Video on Demand) Cognitive Neuroscience from Discovering Psychology
Cognitive neuroscience represents the attempt to understand mental processes at the level of the brain’s functioning and not merely from information-processing models and theories. It relies heavily on an empirical analysis of what is happening in the brain, and where, when a person thinks, reasons, decides, judges, encodes information, recalls information, learns, and solves problems. Cognitive neuroscience allies psychologists, biologists, brain researchers, and others in what is perhaps the most dramatic advance in the last decade of psychological research. With Dr. John Gabrieli of Stanford University and Dr. Stephen Kosslyn of Harvard University. New.

    68. Classics In Psychology
By the 1860s, research on sensation and perception had come into its own as for much of the modern psychology of auditory sensation and perception.

Robert H. Wozniak - Bryn Mawr College
Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz: On the Sensations of Tone (1870; English 1875)
The earliest systematic applications of experimental laboratory procedure to problems of sensation and perception appeared in the first half of the 19th century. In 1825, Jan Evangelista Purkyne published groundbreaking explorations of the effect on visual experience of experimental manipulations that included application to the eyeball of pressure and electric current, alter-ation in point of light exposure relative to the fovea, degree of eye movement, and variation in the intensity of light. Nine years later, in 1834, Ernst Heinrich Weber completed an extensive investigation of the sensory phenomenology of tactile experience that laid the groundwork for Fechner’s eventual development of psychophysics. By the 1860s, research on sensation and perception had come into its own as concepts and techniques from a number of different disciplines were brought together to create the first systematic science of sensory physiology and psychology. Of all those who contributed to this development, none was more important than Hermann Helmholtz 55 and no work more broadly influential than his O n the Sensation of Tone as a Physiological Basis for a Theory of Music The characteristic feature of Helmholtz’s approach to the study of sensory processes was his exceptional ability to unite elements from different intellectual disciplines into an integrated, consistent, and innovative structure that served to explain and relate numerous previously unexplained or poorly explained phenomena. Go to the Graduate Course List for 2001-2002 for the courses offered by this area in the current year. The study of sensation and perception has always been an integral part of experimental psychology, with pioneering contributions made by scientists such as Helmholtz and Fechner. The study of sensation and perception is concerned with the basic processes by which an organism becomes aware of and responds to the environment. Our knowledge and understanding of some of the processes involved in seeing and hearing is well developed, but much remains to be discovered, and the study of sensation and perception continues to play a fundamental role in experimental psychology. A range of research topics is available to the graduate student in Sensation and Perception with an emphasis on vision, as well as research on touch and pain. Usually only one or two of the following courses will be offered each year.

The age-old question "If a tree falls in the wilderness, does it make a sound?" raises a host of psychologically interesting questions. The falling tree generates physical energy, but no psychological experience since no one can hear it. But how do physical events become psychological experiences? How intense must an event be before it is "sensed?" What are the limits of our senses? And how automatic are the processes that we rely on to gather information about the world? Visual Illusions
An incredible collection of illusions is available at illusionworks.com . Be prepared to spend hours looking over the material assembled here. Just for starters, it contains about every basic visual illusion known or studied: from illusions of movement, contour, and figure/ground to impossible figures. Each illusion is explained, AND you can control the illusion in java-based applets. The page also has analyses of very famous puzzles, such as the "trick mule puzzle," art that creates illusions (such as Escher's work). and some auditory illusions. This is a Frames enabled site. Java & Shockwave are required to view some of the interactive scientific demonstrations.
