What is a Psychologist?
A psychologist studies how we think, feel and behave from a scientific viewpoint and applies this knowledge to help people understand, explain, and change their behavior. Some psychologists work primarily as researchers while others work primarily as practitioners in:
  • hospitals schools clinics universities community service organizations correctional facilities rehabilitation centres business private practice, and research agencies.
Psychologists are trained to use interviews and questionnaires to determine a person's strengths and challenges and to develop plans and strategies so that people can make the changes they would like to make in their lives. Those changes can be anything from quitting smoking to getting over a death to how to cope with a new baby. Psychologists work with individuals, groups and families and across the entire age range from children to seniors. The kinds of concerns that people bring to psychologists could be related to:
