Psychological Disorders of Children in Crises
Wars are traumatic to children, especially young children. Children in Crises can experience various developmental delays and psychosocial disorders. In this page, we are trying to help adults to identify children and who are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD). We will first define what are post-traumatic stress disorders. We will then describe the symptoms, which may help parents, teachers, and fieldworkers to identify children with post-traumatic stress disorders. We will also share some "trauma help sheets" with you. Lastly, we are developing a help line to respond to your questions.
    What are post-traumatic stress disorders?
For years, post-traumatic stress disorders were believed to occur among adults who are traumatized by wars or disasters. Recent studies, however, have shown that children are likely to develop post-traumatic stress disorders because of an increasing exposure to armed conflicts and violence in society. According to Duane Brown in "Counseling the Victims of Violence who Develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder," children and adolescents who are exposed to violence by hearing about violent acts, witnessing violence or being victims of violence themselves. Often this will destroy the assumptions children have about their world and they begin to see their future as futile. These children are developing post-traumatic stress disorders.
    What are the symptoms?

Psychological disorders as consequences of involvement in motor vehicle accidents: a discussion and recommendations for a research program
    Author: W.A. Harrison
    Abstract
The potential consequences of crash involvement in the Psychological domain are discussed, based on the small corpus of relevant literature and additional material concerning psychological disorders thought to occur as a result of exposure to traumatic events. The results of an analysis of Victorian crash data suggest that the lifetime risk of developing psychological disorders resulting from injury in a crash is quite high. For post traumatic stress disorder, for example, this risk is estimated at 13.1%. It is concluded that there is a need to conduct research in this area to investigate the psychological consequences of crash involvement in the Australian context and to develop and evaluate therapeutic interventions which might reduce the impact of crash involvement.
    Executive Summary
This report is the result of concerns about the lack of interest in the likelihood that the psychological consequences of crash involvement may have a significant long-term impact on crash victims. 'Re possibility that there may be substantial social and medical/paramedical costs associated with psychological trauma has not been investigated in the Australian context, and there is relatively little research in this area in the international road-safety literature.

Seminars, Educational Presentations, Workshops
Based on my extensive and research oriented knowledge of the literature, and on my 10 years of practical experience with trauma victims, I am able to provide a variety of consultation services to organizations or individuals. Sample Topics:
  • Constant exposure to traumatic incidents of emergency workers and its relationship to job dissatisfaction, work absenteeism, permanent disability and requests for early retirement Comorbidity of PTSD and substance use disorders: effect of alcohol on cognitive and physiological (arousal) symptoms of PTSD Sequels of an accident: how cognitive, behavioural and physiological symptoms of chronic pain contribute to the exacerbation and maintenance of post traumatic stress symptoms Development of PTSD in individuals who are repeatedly exposed to situations in which they witness the sufferings of others Heightened risk of PTSD development in individuals who had been abused during childhood or adolescence. This is of special relevance for people employed in high-risk occupations (eg. military personal, police officers), or in cases where such a "survivor" is being exposed to traumatic incidents of living (eg. car accident, workplace harassment).
