Here we are interested in how people with psychological disorders deal with their emotions. Do people that have psychological disorders process their emotions in ways that are different to those that have not, and if so, what are those differences? We also want to know if the different psychological disorders, such as anxiety and depression for example, are characterised by different patterns of emotional processing. Emotional Processing is being measured by the

Below you will find some of the psychological illnesses and addictions that can sometimes co-exist with an Eating Disorder.
Some of the psychological illness that can be (but are not always) found in people suffering with Anorexia, Bulimia and Compulsive Overeating are: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, BiPolar and BiPolar II Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Panic Disorders and anxiety, and Dissociative Disorder and Multiple Personality Disorder. In addition, some people suffering with an Eating Disorder may also be exhibiting other addictive or self-destructive behaviors. As an Eating Disorder is a reaction to a low self-esteem, and a negative means of coping with life and stress, so are other types of addictions. These can include alcoholism, drug addiction (illegal, prescription and/or over-the-counter medications), and self-injury, cutting and self-mutilation. Harming oneself, also known as cutting, self-mutilation, or SIV (self-inflicted violence) is a coping mechanism that is sometimes found in people also suffering with an Eating Disorder. For some, they may find it easier to deal with real physical pain than to deal with their emotional pain, or some may feel emotionally numb and using SIV reminds them that they are alive. They may even feel that they deserve to be hurt. It can be used to block out emotional pain, or to make the person feel "strong". It is a way to cope with stress and anger, shame and guilt, sadness, and as a release for emotions that have built up inside. SIV can be mild to severe, but it should

Psychiatric/Psychological Disorders
Students with psychiatric disabilities have experienced significant emotional issues that generally have chronic symptoms and have been treated professionally. With appropriate treatment, often combining medications, psychotherapy, and support, the majority of psychiatric disorders can be controlled. The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that one in five people in the United States have some form of psychiatric disability, but only one in five persons with a diagnosable psychiatric disorder ever seeks treatment due to the strong stigmatization involved. Below are brief descriptions of some common psychiatric disabilities Depression is a major disorder that can begin at any age. Major depression may be characterized by a depressed mood most of each day, a lack of pleasure in most activities, thoughts of suicide, sleep problems, and feelings of worthlessness or guilt. Bipolar disorder (manic depressive disorder) causes a person to experience periods of mania and depression. In the manic phase, a person might experience inflated self-esteem and a decreased need to sleep.

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) to identify psychological disorders. The DSM has been around for more than 50 years, and in its current fourth edition, psychopathology is described in terms of observable symptoms. Individuals are diagnosed on a multiaxial scale, including clinical syndromes, personality disorders, general medical conditions, psychosocial stressors, and global assessment of functioning . However, the DSM-IV gives little information about the cause, prognosis, or treatment of disorders. The authors review some of the classic models of psychopathology ( psychoanalytic, family systems, sociocultural, cognitive-behavioral

Psychological Disorders Previous page Contents Next page
Psychological disorders cover a wide range of conditions, including attention deficit disorders, eating disorders, depressive disorders, and other conditions. The majority of psychological disorders are treated using a combination of medication, therapy, and support. Because of the social stigma that often accompanies these conditions, students may be reluctant to disclose their needs for accommodations. Some of the causes of these disorders are trauma, biochemical imbalances, highly stressful life experiences and other genetic, biological and social factors. While it likely takes a combination of several of these factors to produce a serious psychological disability, researchers are working to discover specific causes of these conditions. The psychological disorders most commonly experienced by students at Southern include: Anxiety Attention Deficit Disorders Depressive Disorders Eating Disorders Panic Disorders Personality Disorders Post Traumatic Stress Disorders Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders Schizophrenia Substance Abuse
General Considerations
When a student with a disability makes a request for an accommodation, try to satisfy the request as soon as possible. If a request seems unreasonable, check with the DRC-don't just ignore the request.

Conclusion MENTAL/PSYCHOLOGICAL DISORDERS AND REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS: The ADA defines “mental impairment” as any mental or psychological disorder, such as emotional or mental illness, which includes:
  • manic depression, major depression, bipolar disorder, most anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and personality disorders found in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV).
Mental illness is not the same as mental retardation. The two are distinct disorders. A diagnosis of mental retardation is chiefly characterized by limitations in intellectual functioning, as well as difficulties with certain skills of daily life. By definition, mental retardation begins before the age of 18. In effective communication, approach each inmate/parolee with an open mind and about his/her strengths and abilities. Effective communication may be achieved by using basic communication skills in a patient, respectful, dignified manner, avoiding big words or complicated concepts.
