Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Schema Therapy is similar to cognitive therapy in that the focus is on correcting problems in a person's habitual patterns of thinking and feeling, and corresponding difficulties in his or her behavioral coping style. The focus is on identifying and understanding, and then challenging and overcoming the long-standing maladaptive patterns in thinking, feeling and behavior that create obstacles for a person in getting needs met and attaining life goals. As with standard CBT, the goal is for the person to feel better and enjoy greater life satisfaction. CTA is a network of experienced therapists in the NY metro area who provide Cognitive Therapy and Schema-Focused Therapy. To inquire about an appointment, please call us at 212-258-2577.

Psychoanalysis
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Psychology Areas Cognition Development Clinical Emotion ... Applied psychology Approaches Behavioral Biological Cognitive Evolutionary ... Transpersonal Psychoanalysis is a family of psychological theories and methods within the field of psychotherapy that work to elucidate connections among unconscious components of patients' mental processes, and to do so in a systematic way through a process of tracing out associations. In classical psychoanalysis, the fundamental subject matter of psychoanalysis is the unconscious patterns of life as they become revealed through the analysand's (the patient's) free associations. The analyst's goal is to help liberate the analysand from unexamined or unconscious barriers of transference and resistance, that is, past patterns of relatedness that are no longer serviceable or that inhibit freedom. More recent forms of psychoanalysis seek, among other things, to help patients gain self-esteem through greater trust of the self, overcome the fear of death and its effects on current behavior, and maintain several relationships that appear to be incompatible.

Malmberg L, Fenton M ABSTRACT What's new in this issue Search abstracts Browse alphabetical list of titles Browse by Review Group A substantive amendment to this systematic review was last made on 24 May 2001. Cochrane reviews are regularly checked and updated if necessary. Background: People with schizophrenia and severe mental illness may require considerable support from health care professionals, in most cases over a long period of time. Research on the effects of psychotherapy for schizophrenia shows mixed results. Although pharmacological interventions remain the treatment of choice for schizophrenia patients, it is also of interest to look at the effects of treatment methods focusing on psychosocial factors affecting schizophrenia. Objectives: To review the effects of individual psychodynamic psychotherapy and/or psychoanalysis for people with schizophrenia or severe mental illness. Search strategy: Electronic searches of Biological Abstracts (1985-1999), CINAHL (1982-1999), The Cochrane Library CENTRAL (Issue 1, 1999), The Cochrane Schizophrenia Group's Register (2000), Dissertation Abstracts On Disc (1866-1999), EMBASE (1980-1999), MEDLINE (1966-1999), National Research Register (2000), PsycLIT (1974-1999), and Sociofile (1974-1998) were made. Authors of included trials were contacted for information on further trials.
