Neuropsychology for Neurologists
David W. Loring, Ph.D. and Kimford J. Meador, M.D.
Department of Neurology, Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, Georgia, USA, 30912-3275
Presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Neurology, Seattle, Washington, May 12, 1995. INTRODUCTION BACKGROUND Although many neuropsychologists still administer the Halstead-Reitan battery, a gradual shift away from this test battery has occurred since the role of neuropsychological assessment in most contexts is no longer to detect "organicity," but rather, to assess the cognitive and behavioral deficits associated with known cerebral lesions. Many neuropsychologists, however, continue to use selected tests from the Halstead-Reitan Battery in their clinical evaluations. Despite neuropsychology's diminished role in the detection and localization of cerebral lesions, most neuropsychological batteries are constructed to assess standard neurobehavioral aspects of brain impairment associated with focal brain lesions or obtained through the study of patients with traditional neurobehavioral syndromes. The areas most commonly assessed include general intellectual function (i.e., IQ), language, visual spatial ability, memory and learning, attention and concentration, motor/sensory function, abstraction and executive function, and personality. A comprehensive listing and description of specific tests that may be used in neuropsychological assessment can be found in Lezak (1995).

Postdoctoral Neuropsychology Certificate Program Overview In our two-year Postdoctoral Neuropsychology Certificate Program , students and faculty meet in cluster groups in major metropolitan areas. The program is designed to meet the needs of professional psychologists who seek an alternative to residency programs away from their work. This postdoctoral program allows students to continue working in their current positions while at the same time gaining both the theoretical grounding and applied clinical experience needed to develop proficiency in neuropsychological assessment and intervention. The program has three components : theory/foundation courses, hands-on clinical assessment courses, and a clinical component consisting of a 1,000 hour clinical experience with an additional 200 hours of supervision. There is also a final professional evaluation. The program is guided by its cluster faculty and practicing neuropsychologists, many of whom have published widely and made significant contributions to the field. Our program is designed for doctoral level psychologists practicing with populations of neuropsychological relevance who wish to gain special proficiency in neuropsychological assessment and intervention.

The assay can help differentiate between generalized tonic-clonic or complex partial seizure and psychogenic non-epileptic seizure among adults and older children. The test does not distinguish epileptic seizures from syncope. The new guideline Practice Assessment: The Use of Serum Prolactin in Diagnosing Epileptic Seizures is available to print.
