Van Kaam the Psychologist
The project of Formative Spirituality came out of the study of religion and psychology. The main theorist is Adrian van Kaam. As a psychologist, it would appear that van Kaam's central concern was with the underlying philosophical assumptions of the various schools of psychology. According to him, these assumptions went unacknowledged by most practitioners in the field thus having an unrecognized effect upon psychological theorizing and practice. Without a recognition of these assumptions regarding the "nature of man" and their effects psychologists fall prey to an error of mistaking their partial psychological perspective for the whole. Van Kaam groups these perspectives into two main camps: the positivist and the idealist. Both of these are expressions of an underlying Cartesian prejudice mind-body types of dualism. These two main assumptive camps produce the various schools of psychology that are, at best, limited perspectives on any given human event. This elicits from van Kaam a concern for the development of a structure or principle of organization that would enable us to maintain awareness of, and a sense of relationship among the various perspectives that may be taken on the varieties of human experience. Early in his thought he used the term "anthropological psychology" in an attempt to communicate the need for this structure that could be used to integrate the various perspectives on the "nature of man". Van Kaam's use of the term "anthropological psychology" not only functioned as a way of taking into account various underlying assumptions, but by the nature of its integrative function it would be able to view the human as both similar to animals and as unique from them. It would function in such a way that the psychologist should be able to simultaneously hold in his or her attention the insights of such various schools of thought as the Skinnerian and Jungian without becoming exclusivistic. This psychology would be able to integrate not only various psychological schools, but religious perspectives on the "nature of man" as well.

Alfred Adler, depth psychologist (1870 - 1937) Abstract Pastoral theology, unlike theoretical theology, is rooted in the existential understanding of the contemporary Christian. Alfred Adler's Individual Psychology, an existential philosophy, is a useful psychoanalytic approach to pastoral practice. Individual Psychology is a non-theoretical understanding of life which provides a basis for an holistic pastoral practice. There are many psychoanalytic theories useful to pastoral practice. Alfred Adler's Individual Psychology is one of them. Because of his sympathetic attitude toward religious belief his Individual Psychology affirms the person within a Christian understanding of human development. Adler's Individual Psychology is set out in his theory of Community Feeling which is useful in developing Christian understanding. Community Feeling refers to a feeling of belonging, of being accepted within a community. The German term for Community Feeling is Gemeinschaftsgefuehl . Community Feeling is more than an attitude of civil interest or association. Community Feeling enters into a transcendental understanding in its more developed stages. Thus, Community Feeling is an aspect of an holistic pastoral psychology. Adler believed that the ultimate purpose of psychotherapy was to improve the human social condition. In light of this goal Muller developed a religious humanism based on Adlerian Individual Psychology. [2] According to O'Connell, "In Adler's theory the Christian movement represented one of the finest forces directing the movement of mankind. Its end was the search for perfection and the elevation of the family and mankind." [3]

Simple language, profound useful thoughts. I use his ideas every day in my work as a psychotherapist as well as a in my daily living. Jared The Discovery of Being: Writings in Existential Psychology > Customer Review #3: The best introduction to existential psychology This is the most succinct and authoritative introduction to existential psychology and psychotherapy currently available. It contains a variety of Mays pithy and penetrating essays on the subject, including his introductory chapter to the classic collection EXISTENCE (1958) that first conveyed the tenets of European existential analysis across the Atlantic to America. When I teach courses on existential psychotherapy, this is one of the titles I like to include as required reading.

Ethical Issues in Existential Practice 8. To Be Or Not To Be... an Existential Sport Psychologist. ¡¡The existential approach described by Mark Nesti offers a radical alternative to the cognitive-behavioural model which informs most contemporary applied sports psychology. Whereas standard psychological models of athlete behaviour would advocate appropriate 'mental skills' training, such as visualising the perfect race, to help an athlete overcome performance problems, the existential approach will refer to an athletes unique emotional world to find deeper causes of their limitation. These causes may be only very indirectly linked to the athletes 'sporting' life.
¡¡Existential sports psychology has gone out of phenomenological theory and existential philosophy. Mark Nesti's text is the first book to present an overview of this exciting approach. It contains case studies and a framework for psychologists to apply this approach to their work.

Brentano thought that human feelings and thoughts intended something outside itself. Another phenomenologist, Edmund Husserl considered the conscious experience must precede any other human knowledge. Husserl discovered pure Phenomenology; a person turned inward instead outward. Later, Husserl's philosophy became existential psychology. B. Existential Psychology Martin Heidegger was one of the leading existentialists who tried to restore the importance of human feeling and choice. Heidegger believed that, in ourselves, everything can be found. Heidegger used the term "dasein" which meant being in the world. Our attitude and behavior often reflect our inner feelings, but, according to Heidegger, the inauthentic people cannot show their inner feelings like the authentic people do. Ludwig Binswanger used the term "Weltanschauung" which meant world-design. According to Binswanger, a person's world-design must be effective, for that person to control the emotions of own. Binswanger thought that it was therapists' job to give the clients to get a new world-view when their world-view is not effective.
