The Emergence of Positive Psychology: The Building of a Field of Dreams Shane J. Lopez, PhD
University of Kansas "Build it and they will come. Build it and they will come." A similar eerie directive echoed in Ray Consella's mind in the popular movie, "Field of Dreams." An epiphany occurred when Consella realized that the building of a baseball field in rural Iowa would open a metaphysical door to his past and his future. Dr. Martin Seligman experienced a similar epiphany that occurred in his garden and was brought about by the profound words of a child, his daughter Nikki. In a 1999 speech, Dr. Seligman recounted the experience that changed his view of parenting and psychology and he concluded the following: Raising Nikki would be about taking the strength that she had just shownI call it seeing into the soulnaming it, nurturing it, reinforcing it, helping her to lead her life around it and let it buffer against the weaknesses and the vicissitudes. The most important thing, the most general thing I learned, was that psychology was half-baked, literally half-baked. We had baked the part about mental illness; we had baked the part about repair of damage...The other side's unbaked, the side of strength, the side of what we're good at.

Modal content in dreams and imagination
Colin McGinn is the only philosopher I know who's published on the relation between dreaming and imagination. He agrees with me that our sensory-like experience during dreams is not actually sensory, but rather imagistic. (He disagrees with my further position, and Ernie Sosa's: that additionally, our belief-like experiences during dreams are not beliefs.) McGinn has some interesting arguments for the imagery claim, including several that I'd never considered before. One of his arguments is about "why dreams strike us as 'modally exhaustive'." I find this argument to be rather confusing, not least because I don't know that dreams do strike us as modally exhaustive. Here's what McGinn writes: This [the imagery theory of dreaming] is also why dreams strike us as "modally exhaustive" I mean, why the dream world seems the only conceivable world during the course of the dream. For, since the imagination is already fully occupied, we cannot use it to conjure up laternative imaginary worlds to that depicted in the dream. And perhaps thtis also accounts for their peculiar ability to defeat the dreamer's consciousness, to reduce him to despair for no alternative to the presently experienced world can be envisaged. In waking consciousness I can be perceiving one thing and imagining something else: there is the perceived world and the imagined world. I "live" in both worlds, the actual and the possible, in that both are mentally represented by me. But in the dream there is only the dream world and no envisaged alternative to it; so I feel condemned to that world, since I can picture no other. I become modally blind, so to speak; the possible world I am conjuring in my dream is the only world that I can represent. The sense of alternatives has disappeared from my sonciousness. The thought "I might not have been having this experience" does not belong in the dream consciousness. This is predictable from the image theory and mysterious for the percept theory. (
