You might be upset if a psychology exam contained physics questions! creativity is a process of producing something original and valuable.

Mod 6a Intelligence and Creativity How is Intelligence Defined? Intelligence is difficult to define. Theoretically it is the capacity to learn new information, to understand one’s world and to be resourceful in coping with challenges. Intelligence consists of abilities necessary to adapt to the environment to achieve goals. You are intelligent if you understand what is going on around you, can learn from experience and can act in ways that are successful in your environment. Psychologists differ on how they define intelligence and exactly which abilities comprise "intelligence." On a practical level, intelligence is often defined by what intelligence tests measure What are the differences between intelligence, achievement and aptitude? Achievement refers to knowledge and skills gained from experience, an achieved level of expertise or performance in a specific domain ( e.g. your psychology exams Aptitude measures the capability to acquire knowledge, expertise or skill in a domain or set of domains An aptitude test e.g. the SAT, Scholastic Aptitude Test)

Monitor on psychology What exactly is creativity? International Center for Studies in creativity - Two dimensions of creativity level and style
http://www.uclan.ac.uk/facs/science/psychol/Psychology/defining.htm
Defining creativity
" Create (verb) To bring into being, cause to exist; esp. to produce where nothing was before, ‘to form out of nothing’ " Oxford English Dictionary
Creativity is a complex cognitive ability, which everyone has to some extent. Definitions of creativity are very diverse. They mention problem solving, using the representational system, metacognition, intelligence, etc. Creativity is also related to personality, motivation, environmental conditions, culture, birth order, etc.
Definitions of creativity
Before you attempt to make a scientific measurement of anything, you have to decide what it is you want to measure. To compare your results with other people's research, you need to have public agreement on a definition of the research topic. (Otherwise what you are doing is more like literary criticism than science.) But tightly defining creativity is very awkward; the everyday usage of the word covers many different things. So everyone thinks they know what is meant by creativity, but they don't all mean the same thing! This confusion over the definition explains many of the theoretical conflicts over creativity. Monitor on Psychology - What exactly is creativity?

The investment theory of creativity
"It is the tension between creativity and skepticism that has produced the stunning and unexpected findings of science." Carl Sagan:
Converging factors
[Sternberg and Lubart 1991, 1993, 1995] propose that, for creativity to occur, multiple environmental factors must converge:
  • A suitable environmental context. Appropriate knowledge. Intrinsic motivation. Relevant personality variables. Appropriate intellectual processes. Appropriate intellectual style.
  • Only the last two are primarily cognitive. So creativity is seen as being dependent on the right combination of circumstances arising; a motivated, knowledgable and capable individual with access to the tools needed. You can picture this perhaps as the traditional castaway on a desert island faced with constructing some means of escape. The castaway needs to have:
  • materials to build with. some experience of making things. the urge to return to civilisation.

    homepage
The Psychology of Art (I) The origins of creativity, neurosis and the artist by Sheldon Litt
That art has a neurotic source may be readily observed in some instances but obviously there are great artists, the lives of whom reveal little evidence for the universality of this conception. Thus, while Rembrandt's tragic suffering points in this direction, the happy un-neurotic life of Rubens give us a contradictory example.
Following Freud's theory (while overlooking the exceptions), many writers have consequently sought to explain a work of art by delving into the disturbed emotional life of the artist. In their view, the theme of composition is always autobiographical and reflects the artist's own unresolved sexual problems. Freud started this trend with his epochal study of Leonardo da Vinci, which traced the relationship between Leonardo's inverted sexuality and his art.
Yet the point must be emphasised here that many people, not only artists, have endured suffering. A biographer who digs enough can always locate evidence of emotional instability and a pained psyche in everyone. Man's existential Angst is universal. But not all of us utilise this feeling for creative purposes. Why then seek the origin of art in the endless cesspool of man's constant anxiety?
The true well-spring of art come forth from sources deeper than the neurotic symptom, and is the common denominator of our basic humanness. The artist doesn't produce art because of his sickness; his artistic capacity is there first, as a natural development that emerges in spite of his neurosis.

I knew in the 8th grade that I wanted to be a clinical psychologist. I wanted to do something that involved science and also involved working directly with people and helping them. Clinical psychology enabled me to do both during my career. As an undergraduate at the University of Pittsburgh, I did an independent study that investigated creativity and anxiety. Affect and creativity has been an enduring interest of mine. After I received my Ph.D. at the University of Pittsburgh, I did a child internship at the Pittsburgh Child Guidance Center. I then spent 4 years at the Washington University Child Guidance Center where I worked with many children using play in therapy. I began to notice the link between play and creativity at that time. After joining the faculty at Case in 1975, I pursued my interests in studying play, affect, and creativity. I have also been active in professional organizations. I have served as President of the Society for Personality Assessment, Child Clinical section of Division 12 of APA, and Division 10 of APA (Aesthetics, Creativity, and the Arts). Currently, I serve on the Council of APA. I have loved working with my psychology colleagues in these organizations and being involved in current issues in psychology.

    HUMANISTIC PSYCHOLOGY OVERVIEW Throughout
history many individuals and groups have affirmed the inherent value and dignity of human beings. They have spoken out against ideologies, beliefs and practices which held people to be merely the means for accomplishing economic and political ends. They have reminded their contemporaries that the purpose of institutions is to serve and advance the freedom and power of their members. In Western civilization we honor the times and places, such as Classical Greece and Europe of the Renaissance, when such affirmations were expressed. Humanistic Psychology is a contemporary manifestation of that ongoing commitment. Its message is a response to the denigration of the human spirit that has so often been implied in the image of the person drawn by behavioral and social sciences. During the first half of the twentieth century, American psychology was dominated by two schools of thought: behaviorism and psychoanalysis. Neither fully acknowledged the possibility of studying values, intentions and meaning as elements in conscious existence. Although various European perspectives such as phenomenology had some limited influence, on the whole mainstream American psychology had been captured by the mechanistic beliefs of behaviorism and by the biological reductionism and determinism of classical psychoanalysis. The "Second Force" emerged out of Freudian psychoanalysis and the depth psychologies of Alfred Adler, Erik Erikson, Erich Fromm, Karen Horney, Carl Jung, Melanie Klein, Otto Rank, Harry Stack Sullivan and others. These theorists focused on the dynamic unconscious - the depths of the human psyche whose contents, they asserted, must be integrated with those of the conscious mind in order to produce a healthy human personality . The founders of the depth psychologies believed (with several variations) that human behavior is principally determined by what occurs in the unconscious mind. So, where the behaviorists ignored consciousness because they felt that its essential privacy and subjectivity rendered it inaccessible to scientific study, the depth psychologists tended to regard it as the relatively superficial expression of unconscious drives.
