Creativity and Flow Psychology by Douglas Eby "The best moments usually occur when a person's body
or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort
to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile."
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi T he author of "Flow - the Psychology of Optimal Experience" and a number of related books, psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (pronounced me-high chick-sent-me-high) says we can facilitate the conditions for this quality of optimal functioning, and that it may be found in a wide range of careers and activities. For his doctoral thesis on "how visual artists create art" he studied photos taken every three minutes as artists created a painting. He says he was "struck by how deeply they were involved in work, forgetting everything else. That state seemed so intriguing that I started also looking for it in chess players, in rock climbers, in dancers and in musicians. He cautions that many people misunderstand flow as a kind of "spacing out" and seek it in passive leisure activities. "Most people look so much forward to being home, relaxing. Then they get home and don't know what to do. They aren't challenged, so they sit in front of the TV, depressed." [1] Athletes call flow experience being in the "zone" - an optimal psychological and physiological climate for peak performance. Brazilian soccer player Pele has described days when everything was going right, and feeling "a strange calmness I hadn't experienced in any of the other games. It was a type of euphoria; I felt I could run all day without tiring, that I could dribble through any of their teams or all of them, that I could almost pass through them physically. I felt I could not be hurt."

The Psychology of Creativity:
redeeming our inner demons an interview with Stephen A. Diamond, Ph.D. by Douglas Eby
A clinical and forensic psychologist, Dr. Stephen Diamond works with many talented individuals committed to becoming more creative. "Creativity," he states, " is one of humankind's healthiest inclinations, one of our greatest attributes."
As he explains in his book, "Anger, Madness, and the Daimonic: The Psychological Genesis of Violence, Evil, and Creativity," our impulse to be creative "can be understood to some degree as the subjective struggle to give form, structure and constructive expression to inner and outer chaos and conflict. "It can also be one of the most dynamic methods of meeting and redeeming one's devils and demons." Anger, he asserts, is one of the most troubling emotions for psychotherapy patients in general. Yet, there is, Diamond says, a "very strong correlation between anger, rage and creativity, one which most people are not aware of. Most of us tend to view anger or rage negatively, associating it almost exclusively with destructiveness and violence. Certainly this correlation exists. But anger can also motivate constructive and creative behavior." In his brief foreword to Diamond's book, psychologist Rollo May introduces and defines the classic Greek conception of the "daimonic" or darker side of our being, noting that "the daimonic (unlike the demonic, which is merely destructive) is as much concerned with creativity as with negative reactions. A special characteristic of the daimonic model is that it considers both creativity on one side, and anger and rage on the other side, as coming from the same source. That is, constructiveness and destructiveness have the same source in human personality. The source is simply human potential."

Two of the world's leading experts on creativity, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and Robert Epstein, debate the myths that surround this mysterious process. Do we all have the ability or is it reserved for only the few? Wyoming is not only the birthplace of Jackson Pollock, master of squiggly art. Its also the home of Casper College, host to a remarkable humanities festival that annually draws top scholars and scientists. This year the Casperians took a careful look at that mysterious domain that Pollock had mastered as few others have: creativity. For three days, distinguished poets, artists, writers, composers and scientists from around the country presented their varied perspectives on the creative process, all before a stage set for Shakespeare's The Tempest (the play was being performed each evening in the same auditorium).

The psychology of creativity and genius: reflections on Shakespeare and the Oxfordian challenge. Journal of Evolutionary Psychology August, 2004 by Kevin Simpson The manifestation of genius evident in the creative endeavors of those in artistic and scientific professions has long-held the imagination of scholars interested in delving into causal origins of such brilliance. Until recently, the specific contribution of the social sciences to resolution of the authorship question has been relatively muted outside of personality analyses and interpretive suppositions. The predictive potential of psychological research to point to the most likely author of the works attributed to William Shakespeare is substantial, though admittedly difficult. The present inquiry will attempt to outline critical elements of the broad, extant empirical literature on the individual ...

30. Transforming The Mind - Background Psychology
creativity is part of problem solving and goal achievement, rather than something confined to poets, painetrs and musicians.
http://www.trans4mind.com/transformation/transform5.5.htm
Transforming the Mind
Creativity
Creativity is a special kind of thinking that involves originality and fluency, that breaks away from existing patterns and introduces something new. Creativity may be applied to problem solving, in which case it facilitates the generation of a range of possible solutions, in particular to problems which have no single right answer. Alternatively, and most productively, it may be applied to the process of creating - this means the realising of a held vision, empowered by a tension-resolution system which is put in place by the existing reality being differentiated from a desired vision. So creativity is obviously something that happens frequently in everyday life, rather than something confined to poets, painters and musicians. The creative process appears typically to follow four stages: Preparation - considering the situation is a telic and paratelic process, playing around with ideas and deliberating on their feasibility; then, identifying the problem, issue, theme or vision, finding out what one really wants to achieve, causes a reversal to paratelic excitement (or sometimes telic anxiety, particularly if this is an other-determined should or must). Incubation - the matter sinks into the unconscious; if access to the unconscious is blocked (such as by anxiety) this resource (the processing power of whole brain) may be limited or slow to emerge. Also, within consciousness, current reality is further compared to the envisioned outcome, to energise the incubation and provide more data.

As is now known, LSD is unpredictable in its potential effect and is known to induce psychosis. Over the next several years, Wilson withdrew from touring with the Beach Boys and limited his involvement to writing songs. Locking himself in his bedroom for months on end, living on candy bars and milk shakes, he became completely dependent on his family for his spending money and his ability to get around.

a seminar with Jonathan Young presented by This is a day on the relationship between the unconscious and the creative process. Presentations draw on timeless stories, such as Alice in Wonderland and Robin Hood, to look at issues faced by highly inventive people. We will consider the significance of motivations in understanding problems in artistic careers. We will give special attention to blocks and other challenges unique to creative endeavors. This course would be useful for clinicians working with professional writers, visual artists, performers, and others whose work demands high levels of originality. It would also be of interest to those in such fields who have an interest in an archetypal understanding of the creative process.
