Neisser, U. (1967)
Cognitive Psychology. Englewood Cliffs, N.J.:Prentice-Hall.
Nominator's statement
An important book, but certainly not what launched cognitive psychology! At best, it helped baptize it with a name.
comments
  • This book effectively launched cognitive psychology as an independent discipline.
  • The defining moment in the birth (rebirth) of cognition as an area of scientific inquiry was the publication of Neisser's book.

Cognitive Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience
RECENT HIGHLIGHTS
Emotion Explained
A successor to The Brain and Emotion (OUP, 1998), this book describes the nature, functions and brain mechanisms that underlie both emotion and motivation. However, it goes beyond examining brain mechanisms of emotion, by proposing a theory of what emotions are, and an evolutionary, Darwinian, theory of the adaptive value of emotion.

512-224 Cognitive Psychology 2
Credit Points Coordinator Dr Sarah Wilson Prerequisites 512-120 and 512-121 (or equivalent) Semester (view timetable) Contact Twenty-four hours of lectures, 12 hours of laboratory classes Subject Description This subject examines higher mental processes such as attention, memory, language and thinking. The subject comprises two units. Attention and Memory deals with the experimental study of attention and memory. It examines the nature and function of selective attention and its role in human cognition, and investigates the structure, function and organisation of the human memory system. The approach taken is an information processing one, in which an analysis is made of human performance on simple cognitive tasks. This method is used to gain insight into the processes that underlie everyday cognitive activity, and to evaluate competing theoretical accounts of what attention and memory are and how they function. Language and Cognition introduces students to the experimental study of language and cognition. Language lectures give students an understanding of the nature and function of language by exploring such issues as language acquisition, the biology of language and speech, language disorders, and issues in reading and writing. The cognition lectures provide students with an introduction to issues in human cognition such as problem solving and representation, decision making, and the relationship between language and thought.

Cognitive psychology: a meeting of the mind and education To John Bruer, cognitive psychology is the critical bridge between brain science and education. BY BRIDGET MURRAY Monitor staff A true understanding of how the brain handles learning tasks will only be reached with the help of cognitive psychologists, says John Bruer, PhD, president of the James S. McDonnell Foundation. But even imaging research, he says, must stem from quality cognitive science. Cognitive psychology, says Bruer, can serve as the "bridge" between this type of hard neuroscience and the schools. In a conversation with the Monitor, Bruer, whose background is in philosophy and physics and whose foundation funds mainly biomedical and behavioral sc iences research, called on psychologists to collaborate more closely with educators as they structure studies of the brain and attempt to apply their findings to education. Q. What have been some of the most dangerous myths that have been spread through brain-based education?

Course Procedures
This course is designed for students who are interested in the field of psychology and want to understand more about the workings of perceptual systems and the mind. An introductory course in psychology (PSYC 104) is a prerequisite. While not required, introductory courses in human development or biology would also be valuable.
Texts
Required Reed, Stephen K. Cognition. 6th ed. Belmont, CA: Wadsworth, 2004. Recommended Buyer, Linda S. Study Guide for Reed's Cognition, Sixth Edition. Wadsworth, 2004.
Lessons
Each of the eight lessons contains the six components (Objectives, Reading Assignment, Introduction, Discussion, Suggested Further Reading, Writing Assignment) described below. Read this section carefully to learn how to proceed through the course. Objectives These questions identify key concepts, facts, or theories stressed in the lesson material. They serve as valuable guides and highlight what you should be able to do when you complete a lesson. Consider them as you read the discussion and the reading assignment. They also point out what you need to know for the examinations. Return to them upon lesson completion to see how well you can answer them without looking at the text. Answers will not be graded and do not need to be turned in to your instructor. Reading Assignment Each lesson is based on one or more chapters in the text. Because there is no lecture associated with this class, only a written discussion, it is important to read your textbook thoroughly. In the discussions I will occasionally refer you to the textbook for more detail. Use those references and the objectives questions to help focus your attention when reading the textbook.
