Cognitive Versus
Behavioral Psychology
Fred T. Hofstetter
University of Delaware
This article consists of excerpts from Chapter Four of the McGraw-Hill textbook Multimedia Literacy Rhonda Sands Much of what happens in the traditional classroom was influenced heavily by the behaviorist movement, which dominated American psychology from about 1920 to 1970. Chief among the behaviorists was Skinner (1938, 1953), who saw that human behavior is powerfully shaped by its consequences. Moreover, Skinner felt that psychology was essentially about behavior and that behavior was largely determined by its outcomes. While Skinnerian methods have been effective in learning how to train animals and helping human beings modify their behavior, the behaviorists fell short of what is most important in education for most educators. To educate, you must do more than modify behavior. To educate, you must help the student learn how to develop strategies for learning. Such is the goal of the cognitive movement in education as defined by Bruning (1995, p. 1):
Cognitive psychology is a theoretical perspective that focuses on the realms of human perception, thought, and memory. It portrays learners as active processors of informationa metaphor borrowed from the computer worldand assigns critical roles to the knowledge and perspective students bring to their learning. What learners do to enrich information, in the view of cognitive psychology, determines the level of understanding they ultimately achieve.

Online Cognitive Psychology Test (Thinking Quiz)
Take this free online cognitive psychology test and find areas where your thinking may be causing you difficulties. NOTE: This quiz is thought- provoking (and offensive to some).
Our emotional responses depend upon our thinking processes much more than we think they do. In crisis situations we might cry, laugh, be angry or be fearful depending upon what we THINK about the situation. Often we can change our unhappy responses just by changing our thinking about some situation. (This is the basis for the often-fast-acting "thinking-style" therapies like Rational Emotive, Option and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.)
Try answering the following quiz rapidly. True False - I sometimes think some other peoples' behavior is wrong.

    Anatomy of Disgust
Resource established to accompany a Channel 4 series investigating the human disgust response and the various uses to which associated reactions can be put. Considers what disgusts different people and why, how this is often used to isolate particular social groups, and methods employed by artists in an attempt to diminish the disparity between our hygienic ideals and the grimy reality of our surroundings. The question of whether disgust is an innate or learned characteristic is discussed.

by Jason Withrow What do cognitive psychology and information architecture have in common? Actually there is a good deal of common ground between the two disciplines. First and foremost, both are concerned with mental processes and how to support those processes. Indeed, many information architects (including the author) have backgrounds in cognitive psychology or a closely related field. Certainly, having a background in cognitive psychology supports the practice of information architecture, and it is precisely those interconnections and support that will be explored.
      Mental categories
Given that there are so many possible approaches to categorization, what is an information architect to do? The best advice is to try to accommodate as many different categorization approaches as possible, ideally supporting the most common approaches while realizing that accommodating everyone is impossible. In most cases websites just support one categorization approach for content, which puts the burden on the user to try to work within that approach. If the adjustment cannot be made, it is likely to be quite a frustrating experience. An example of this situation would be the use of categories specific to a given corporate culture; those outside the company would likely have a difficult time following the categorization scheme. Open-ended card sorting is a very useful tool for studying mental categories and exploring why some categories are formed and others are not. Allow the user the freedom to freely sort the content cards, forming groupings and sub-groupings as necessary. If given the choice between sitting down with the user doing the card sort and taking notes, or letting the user complete the sorting using card sorting software, go with the face-to-face interaction. The software will likely perform a cluster analysis and reveal statistical groupings, but it is unlikely to record what the user said at a given moment, why groupings were made, or what groupings were perhaps created initially and then changed later. Those insights are invaluable when trying to understand mental categories.

    Cognitive Science
Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary study of mind and intelligence, embracing philosophy, psychology, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, linguistics, and anthropology. Its intellectual origins are in the mid-1950s when researchers in several fields began to develop theories of mind based on complex representations and computational procedures. Its organizational origins are in the mid-1970s when the Cognitive Science Society was formed and the journal Cognitive Science began. Since then, more than sixty universities in North America and Europe have established cognitive science programs and many others have instituted courses in cognitive science.

Psychology: The Cognitive Movement Dr. C. George Boeree
In the latter half of the twentieth century, the advent of the computer and the way of thinking associated with it led to a new approach or orientation to psychology called the cognitive movement . Many are hoping that it will prove to be the paradigm the unifying theory we have been waiting for. It is still way too early to tell, but the significance of cognitive psychology is impossible to deny. The roots of the cognitive movement are extremely varied: It includes gestalt psychology, behaviorism, even humanism; it has absorbed the ideas of E. C. Tolman, Albert Bandura , and George Kelly Norbert Wiener Norbert Wiener was born November 26, 1894 in Columbia, Missouri. His father was a professor of Slavic languages who wanted more than anything for his son to be a genius. Fortunately, Norbert was up to the task. He was reading by age three, started high school at nine, graduated at 11, got his bachelors at 14, and his masters from Harvard! at 17. He received his PhD a year later, in 1913, with a dissertation on mathematical logic. (If it is any consolation, Norbert was near-sighted, very nervous, clumsy, insecure, and socially inept. However, people liked him anyway!)

An Experiment in A New Kind of Music
Slashdot ] This provides an audio/musical demonstration of a theory where there is no "randomness" but rather a complex consequence of simple local intereaction "rules" that give rise to complex non-regular patterns. The critial point in A New Kind of Science was that (for me) in our collective attempt to describe the "rules of the universe - regularity and orderliness" there was always the leftover "random error" that our rules could not resolve. This encouraged the folk science of "randomness" as a necessary part of every theroy that included real data measurement. The Wolfram notion that there is simple and elegant alternative to "randomness" is further demonstrated in this musical extension of cellular automata to tonal automata. In all of this there is an attempt to provide a theory that accomodates time and growth/change without "randomness" in the rules. BL
