Nature of the Work About this section
Psychologists study the human mind and human behavior. Research psychologists investigate the physical, cognitive, emotional, or social aspects of human behavior. Psychologists in applied fields provide mental health care in hospitals, clinics, schools, or private settings. Like other social scientists, psychologists formulate hypotheses and collect data to test their validity. Research methods may vary depending on the topic under study. Psychologists sometimes gather information through controlled laboratory experiments or by administering personality, performance, aptitude, and intelligence tests. Other methods include observation, interviews, questionnaires, clinical studies, and surveys. Psychologists apply their knowledge to a wide range of endeavors, including health and human services, management, education, law, and sports. In addition to a variety of work settings, psychologists usually specialize in one of a number of different areas. Clinical psychologists—who constitute the largest specialty—usually work in counseling centers, independent or group practices, hospitals, or clinics. They help mentally and emotionally disturbed clients adjust to life and may help medical and surgical patients deal with illnesses or injuries. Some work in physical rehabilitation settings, treating patients with spinal cord injuries, chronic pain or illness, stroke, arthritis, and neurologic conditions. Others help people deal with times of personal crisis, such as divorce or the death of a loved one.

NOTES FROM PANEL OF CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY, PSY. D. , COUNSELING PSYCHOLOGY AND SOCIAL WORK GRADUATE STUDENTS On November 17th, a panel of nine graduate students from clinical psychology programs at Temple, Penn, Hahnemann; Schools of Social Work at Bryn Mawr and Penn; a Psy. D. program at Widener; and a Counseling Psychology program from the University of Nebraska, met with undergraduates. The panelists explained the differences between the various types of degrees available in the mental health field, and covered such topics as preparing for graduate school, the application process, acquiring internships, and the types of jobs that one can get upon completion of the programs.
For undergraduates interested clinical psychology you should be thinking in terms of a five to six year commitment to graduate study, i.e. four years for coursework and dissertation requirements and a one year internship. Panelists strongly recommended Sayette, M., Mayne, T. and Norcross, J.

78. Counseling Vs. Clinical
What is the difference between a clinical psychologist and a counseling psychologist? The specialties of counseling and clinical psychology evolved
http://www.div17.org/Students/difference.htm
What is the difference between a clinical psychologist and a counseling psychologist? Many people are puzzled by the fact that some professional psychologists identify themselves as "counseling" psychologists, while others describe themselves as "clinical" psychologists. Counseling and clinical psychologists often perform similar work as researchers and/or practitioners and may work side by side in any number of settings, including academic institutions, hospitals, community mental health centers, independent practice, and college counseling centers, where they may have overlapping roles and functions. To add to the confusion, the term "clinical" psychology is sometimes used in a generic sense by legislators to refer to psychologists authorized to provide direct services in health care settings, regardless of their training.
The roles of both groups of psychologists changed significantly in the aftermath of World War II. Returning veterans frequently suffered from poor mental health, and required assistance to enable them to reintegrate successfully into society. In order to meet this unprecedented demand for mental health services, the Veterans Administration hospital system employed large numbers of both clinical and vocational psychologists, and established training programs for them. Large numbers of clinical psychologists began to treat veterans' psychiatric problems, while the VA also contracted with colleges and universities to provide vocational and educational advisement services. Because work is an integral part of the fabric of life, vocational psychologists often found that the personal readjustment counseling they offered took into account other factors in clients' experiences.

  • I want to be a mental health counselor. What are my options?
    • Masters in Social Work (MSW)
    • Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT)
    • Masters in School Psychology
    • Masters in Counseling Psychology
    • Doctorate in Counseling Psychology
    • Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (PsyD or PhD)
    • Medical Doctorate in Psychiatry (requires pre-med classes)
    • There are alot of unique Master's degrees available. I've heard of degrees like a Masters in Applied Behavior Analysis, a Masters in Learning Disabilities Counseling, etc.
  • What is the difference between counseling and clinical psychology programs? In general, counseling psych programs are more oriented to training academic counselors for college/university counseling centers. What's unique about counseling programs is that you'll get training both in psychotherapy and academic/career counseling. Clincial psychology is much more focused on training you to become a psychotherapist. The clinical PhD degree is generally very focused on research, although clinical PhD students are still trained to be licensed psychotherapists. The clinical PsyD degree, on the other hand, is focused almost exclusively on psychotherapy training, so there's little research involved. Counseling PhD programs may or may not be research orientedit really depends on the program you attend and what you make of it. In general, clinical psych programs are significantly more competitive, but counseling programs can also be quite selective.
