The predoctoral fellowship (internship) places strong emphasis on child psychology disorders. It is one of several training programs sponsored by the Child Study Center, Yale University School of Medicine. Doctoral candidates from APA-approved (and equivalent) programs may apply. Successful applicants are accepted into the program for two years with the requirement that they obtain their doctoral degree prior to beginning the second year of training. In rare instances, candidates may be considered for a single year of predoctoral or postdoctoral training. Predoctoral and postdoctoral training has been modified recently to include the addition of four specialized training areas that offer unique clinical and research opportunities. These areas are 1) Autism and Developmental Disabilities, 2) Early Childhood, 3) Pediatric Psychology, and 4) Trauma and Children. Applicants to the Child Study Center Fellowship are asked to identify the area or areas for which they would like to be considered for admission. Participation in these specialized areas will involve both clinical and research opportunities beginning in the predoctoral year and continuing through the postdoctoral year.

Questions addressed by developmental psychologists include the following: Are children qualitatively different from adults or do they simply lack the experience that adults draw upon? Does development occur through the gradual accumulation of knowledge or through shifts from one stage of thinking to another? Are children born with innate knowledge or do they figure things out through experience? Is development driven by the social context or by something inside each child? Many theoretical perspectives attempt to explain development, among the most prominent are: Jean Piaget 's Stage Theory Lev Vygotsky 's Social Contextualism , and the information processing framework. Historical theories continue to provide a basis for additional research, among them are
