The goal of the postdoctoral fellowship in child psychology is to provide an intensive supervised clinical experience in the evaluation and treatment of children and adolescents with a wide range of psychiatric disorders. The intern's responsibilities include both initial intake evaluations, psychotherapy as well as psychological testing. Specifically the training experience includes the following:
Evaluation Team The fellow spends six months on the child evaluation team that meets weekly for approximately two hours during which time the intern interviews new patients. The fellow' s supervisor sits in with the intern during the initial session of the evaluation. The supervisor addresses issues of interview techniques, clinical diagnosis and disposition planning. back to top of page
Psychological Testing: back to top of page
Treatment: The fellow gains experience in individual, group, parent training, and family therapy. Supervision is provided from various orientations including psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal and family systems. The fellow gains experience in long-term and brief psychotherapy as well as crisis intervention. Medical back-up is provided for those patients needing medication.

    CHILD PSYCHOLOGY
    There are several faculty members in both the Clinical and Experimental areas with expertise in child development. Consequently, students in both programs can complete a concentration of courses in child development and collaborate with faculty on child development research projects. In addition, in the Clinical program there are training opportunities for coursework and practicum and field experiences focused on the clinical aspects of working with children and their families and environments (i.e., schools, foster care agencies, etc.). Psychology faculty are currently doing research on several topics of child development.

    Kent State University
    , founded in 1910, encompasses over 1,800 acres, including more than 800 acres at the Kent Campus and over 1,000 acres at the seven Regional Campuses in Northeast Ohio. The university's enrollment exceeds 22,000 students. Kent State offers 49 master's programs and 21 doctoral programs. With its optimum blend of a full range of baccalaureate programs and strength in targeted research areas, Kent is among an elite group of Doctorial/Research University-Extensive institutions designated by the Carnegie Foundation.
    The Department of Psychology is located in Kent Hall, one of the older, traditional-style buildings on the gently rolling, tree-covered front campus. A new Kent Hall annex was recently completed to accommodate the department's growth. The original part of Kent Hall is currently under going major renovations.
    The Ph.D. programs in clinical and experimental psychology were established in 1965 and have graduated more than 500 students. The clinical program has been accredited continuously by the American Psychological Association since 1968; its most recent site visit was in 1999, resulting in continued accreditation for the maximum seven year period.
    The Department of Psychology has extensive computer facilities. There is a computer lab for graduate students, which provides access to the Internet and to Kent State's library facilities including PsycInfo and other OhioLink resources. The library also houses IBM compatible and Macintosh computers that students may use.
