Master of Science in Cognitive and Biological Psychology
The Master's degree in Cognitive and Biological Psychology has the goal of giving students a fundamental scientific grounding in the area of Biological and Cognitive Psychology. Through the integration of neurobiology and psychological knowledge, mental processes can be described which are combined with cognitive and emotional information processing tied to learning, memory, language and thinking. In addition to giving a general understanding of Psychology which will allow the student to take part in further research, a Master's degree in Biological and Cognitive Psychology will qualify the student for different types of work opportunities in health areas, teaching and industry. This Master's degree is built on the Bachelor's Degree in Psychology or its equivalent. The normal study time required to receive a Master's degree is two years and qualifies the student for further study at the Ph.D. level. This is a 20 credit module running in the second semester,
and is ONLY for SINGLE SUBJECT PSYCHOLOGY students
School of Psychology, University of Leicester
Module co-ordinator : Dr. Andrew Young Lecturers : Dr. Andrew Young Liz Ockleford Dr. José Prados Dr. Paula Moran Module Aims The broad aim of this course is the study of the biological basis of behaviour. This is approached from the standpoint of brain structure and function, and by examining the activity of the brain during behaviour. The effects of physical changes in the brain, or of drugs, on behaviour in normal and in pathological states is studied. These approaches are complemented by others using formal animal learning theory, and ethological and genetic approaches to the study of behaviour. Module Objectives By the end of this module students should have an understanding o f how animals process causal information, the evolution of behaviour, how information transmission in the brain controls behaviour and how drugs modulate normal and abnormal behaviour. They should also have acquired critical and analytic skills for evaluating published material in the field of Biological Psychology. There are two elements to the module, one lecture based and one library based:

Professor Hunt (Psychology), Coordinator
The Concentration
Biological Psychology is a formalized program within the interdisciplinary studies concentration. Students must declare this major before the beginning of preregistration for the first semester of their senior year by contacting the director of Interdisciplinary Studies (Professor Schwartz in the Charles Center).
The Discipline
Biological Psychology is the study of the biological bases of behavior. Although the discipline is over 100 years old, it has experienced a dramatic growth during the last 30 years. The president of the United States designated the 1990’s the “Decade of the Brain” in recognition of the importance of neuroscience research for the well-being of the nation. Twenty to twenty-five percent of research in neuroscience involves the study of behavior and, therefore, can be classified as biological psychology. Twenty percent of all research grants awarded by the National Institute of Mental Health to psychologists fall under the category of biological psychology. An interdisciplinary studies major in biological psychology is as good as any other liberal arts major for those interested in entering the workforce immediately after graduation. This major is especially appropriate for those interested in continuing into graduate school in the areas of biopsychology, psychobiology and behavioral neuroscience. Except for Calculus and English, this major also satisfies the requirements for pre-med students.
