This module focuses on the study of the biological bases of human behaviour, relating actions and experiences to genetics and physiology. It will cover topic areas including drug addiction, sleep, emotion, language, memory, and schizophrenia. The module will also discuss biological research methods such as brain imaging techniques (for example PET, fMRI, EEG), physiological recording, and the study of brain-damaged patients. The aim of the module is to enable students to reach a sufficient level of understanding of biological psychology to be capable of critically evaluating theory and method in published research. Summary Intended Learning Outcomes At the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Show knowledge and understanding of the structures and functions of the human nervous system (including the brain) that are relevant to the study of psychology

Course outline
This course offers an introduction to the historical origins, perspectives, theories, methods and empirical findings of Biological Psychology. Important features of this sub-discipline will be highlighted with focus on the following topics: the central and peripheral nervous systems, neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of the nervous system, the development of the nervous system, the senses, and motor control. Neural plasticity will be an underlying theme in virtually all the topics covered in the course. The course does not require any prior knowledge of Psychology.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, a successful student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the scientific underpinnings of Biological Psychology.
