ADMISSIONS CURRICULUM RESEARCH FACULTY ... ontact Us T he Biological Psychology Training Program, located in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, offers opportunities in a medical setting (1) to study biobehavioral processes with special emphasis on health-related conditions; (2) to focus on consequences, treatment, and risk factors of substance abuse; and (3) to develop a multi-level, cross-disciplinary approach to conducting basic and applied research. The program was started in 1966 and to date 99 Ph.D.s have been granted and 56 Postdoctoral Fellows have received or are currently receiving training. The Biological Psychology program emphasizes:
  • core course studies stressing the interrelationship between biology and psychology; laboratory experience providing hands-on training in basic and/or applied clinical research; special seminars focusing on substance abuse research and clinical aspects of chemical dependency; and specialization opportunities through advanced elective courses and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

top Course description
This course presents an integrated, interdisciplinary approach to the brain, behavioural and psychological sciences. It concentrates on human examples, and so also considers the implications of our knowledge of behaviour and the nervous system for human health. It asks such questions as: What do biologists and psychologists understand by the concepts of brain and consciousness? How do we study the brain? What is its structure and composition? How does it develop? What is schizophrenia? Observation and experiment are emphasised, and students carry out some investigations themselves.
top Person specification
You should have:
  • a degree or equivalent in a relevant subject experience in neuroscience (plus an interest and knowledge of experimental psychology) or experience in experimental psychology (plus an interest and knowledge of the neurosciences)
