Applying Behavior Analysis Theory to the Software Industry
posted on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 1:15 PM Citing Bob Reselman’s “Coding Slave” Darrell gives his take on how to fix the software development industry In addition to paying great programmers more, we need to pay crappy, or maybe "less sophisticated", programmers much less. On one hand, he’s absolutely right : great programmers should be rewarded. On the other hand, I don’t normally see overpaid software developers . And the “fat” that I do see that should be cut, can never be because of politics, policy, etc. I do, however, run into lots and lots of under-paid, overworked developers

A series of videotapes developed to help parents, teachers, physicians and other professionals establish an Applied behavior analysis (ABA) program for children with autism.
    http://www.bridgesabatapes.com/
BRIDGES is a complete training program developed to help parents, teachers, physicians and other caregivers establish an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) program for children with autism.
Limited-time offer: For a limited time Educational Models Inc. is offering the centerpiece tape in the BRIDGES FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM video series for $99.99. This 2-hour tape consists of some of the best examples of discrete trial training and generalization ever filmed with children. Every child you will see has a diagnosis in the autism spectrum disorder.
Written and directed by certified behavior analyst, Helen Bloomer, The BRIDGES series has received positive reviews from around the country. Tape 2 focuses on discrete trials and generalization and shows examples of children in their initial experiences with Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). You will also see work with children who have had nearly two years of intervention.
The differences in responses of the children is a result of ABA. Resistance is high among children who are newly experiencing this approach, but every child gets past this. Progress of those children who have more months of ABA is evident, particularly in this video. These children have clearly benefited from the experience, and by design, ABA is becoming less and less a part of their lives. They have learned how to learn. And are enjoying it!

    Certificate: Applied Behavior Analysis
The goal of the Certificate Program in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is to introduce students to the field of learning and behavior analysis, and to provide training to individuals interested in designing, delivering, and evaluating behavioral interventions. The 18-credit-unit certificate program provides high-quality training in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis. The coursework, along with appropriate practicum experience, will prepare individuals to sit for the Board Certified Associate Behavior Analyst™ Examination.
Applied behavior analysis uses laboratory-derived principles of learning to improve observable, socially significant behavior. A behavior analyst seeks to improve behavior through empirically valid methodologies while demonstrating reliable relationships between procedures employed and the behavioral outcome.
Many qualified behavior analysts work in clinical settings and residential and vocational programs serving persons with developmental disabilities or mental illness. To illustrate the need for trained behavior analysts, consider the treatment of autism. Autism prevalence in the U.S. is as high as 425,000 cases in children under 18 years of age. Given that there are approximately 2,000 certified behavior analysts nationwide, it is clear that many children treated for autism are being treated by individuals without sufficient training or no training whatsoever. Of course, autism is only one of the diagnoses for which behavioral interventions have demonstrated their effectiveness - a fact which only serves to punctuate the need for qualified behavior analysts.

    Advanced Behavior Analysis
Automatic Behavior Analysis involves automatically recognizing human behavior from video. The context of a given application drives the type and level of behavior being recognized. The behavior can vary from suspicious events like entry into a restricted area to everyday activities such as sitting down to a melee in a crowd. Our team of researchers works on important challenges in the area by using real-world data to develop practical solutions. The focus of this group is centered on all issues connected with:
    • Automatic Face Analysis - detecting, tracking and classifying (demographics) faces, identifying people from faces, and recognizing facial expression to detect suspicious behavior Large Area People Tracking - tracking multiple people across multiple cameras views by taking into account uncertainties due to non-overlapping views Personalized Activity Recognition- recognizing activities of an isolated person like walking, sitting, standing, etc. and personalized learning of activities of individual people to learn their normal activity patterns
