What courses to take

Getting into a graduate program in psychology can be rather complex and confusing. There are many different paths you can take and a variety of hurdles. BUT DON'T PANIC YET! Take it one step at a time. Read over this handout a few times. Write down any questions you may have and bring those questions to one of us, the faculty. We'd be happy to help. THE DIFFERENT AREAS OF GRADUATE STUDY There are several types of graduate programs in psychology, the most common ones being: experimental, developmental, social, biopsychology, cognitive, clinical, counseling, school, and organizational psychology (also known as industrial-organizational psychology, or simply "IO") . These last four (clinical, counseling, school, and IO) are considered by the American Psychological Association (APA) to be the four distinct areas of applied psychology.

Richard Firshein, D.O., collapsed and almost diedironically, while walking out of a hospitalover 15 years ago. An asthma sufferer from an early age, Firshein had also been diagnosed with mononucleosis, chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia in the years before his near-death experience. Then, one night, he had an asthma attack so severe it sent him to the hospital. It was after recovering from that episode that he strolled out of the hospital, deeply inhaled the toxic New York City air and passed out. The incident served as a wake-up callleading him to change his lifestyle and the very way he practiced and thought about medicine.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with It's free! Save it. Abstract We are currently witnessing a major structural change in work forms in Canada. The standard work form full-time, full-year permanent jobs is being supplanted by various forms of 'non-standard' work such as part-time work and temporary or contract work. These alternative work arrangements now account for approximately 30 percent of total employment in 'Canada and represented half of all the new jobs created between 1981 and 1986 (Economic Council of Canada, 1990). Moreover, it is predicted that the 'non-standard' job of today will become the standard job of the future (Human Resources Development Canada, 1994). It is therefore incumbent upon policy-makers, managers, and I-O psychologists to be prepared to meet the challenges that alternative work arrangements will pose for society as a whole, for organizations, and for individual workers.

Dreams - Do they have Meaning?
Every person on earth dreams every night – every mammal in fact. It follows then that something extremely important must be going on while we sleep and dream, yet in the industrialized world, the majority of people pay little attention to dreams, and sometimes shortchange themselves on sleep because it is perceived as lost time, or at best unproductive.
Dreams, in the same way, encompass yet another entire dimension of experience, a world as yet unexplored by most, where a fascinating sphere of activity awaits investigation and possible harvest for greater fulfillment in waking life. The challenge is again the same — common daily experience for the average person offers little proof of this other reality, let alone the possible value of this other dimension of experience, unless one can gain perspective from outside the 9-to-5 work day framework and a scientific purely-objective system.
Dream related mental skills such as dream recall or dream interpretation and information on subjects such as the meaning of nightmares or precognitive dreams isn’t taught in our schools, and the majority of our parents knew or passed on little about the value of dreams as we grew up. So it's no big surprise that many adults remember few or no dreams, and even more rarely contemplate or set out to interpret the guidance and mine the jewels of creative inspiration hidden just below the surface of consciousness in dreams. Basically, nobody told us or showed us how dreams can be extremely practical.

I am a psychotherapist in Santa Fe, New Mexico, offering therapy services via phone sessions, intensive workshops, and email exchanges for clients in the United States, Canada, and throughout the world. My telephone sessions or email exchanges provide you with important insight about yourself and the ways you hold on to unresolved negative feelings and beliefs. From the information you provide me, I am able to identify your emotional attachments and tell how you can get rid of them. Even people who have done a lot of psychotherapy rarely understand these attachments or know what they are. Usually I can identify this for you in the first session. We can schedule your first phone appointment by phone or by email. The number to call me to make an appointment is 505.438.3732. If you prefer to schedule by email, send me the times when you are available, and I will find a time that works and confirm it by return email. For an email session, you would sent me, for the first session, a biography of about three to five pages, which provides some past and current family history, work and relationship status, personal concerns and worries, and what you want to resolve to make your life easier and more fulfilling. I may then ask additional information before I reply with my assessment.

    STATEMENT DP-220-2
    The "Biblical Counseling" Alternative
by Bob and Gretchen Passantino Summary This second of four articles on "Psychology and the Church" focuses on what is called the "Biblical Counseling movement" (BCM). This is a popular evangelical approach to counseling that not only promotes its own program for resolving personal problems within a strict Bible-based foundation, but also asserts that "psychology" — or more specifically, "psychotherapy" — is completely incompatible with its approach. This article defines the Bible Counseling movement, reviews its common criticisms of psychology, summarizes its foundations, commends its many positive contributions, and notes some of its inadequacies. The Bible’s teaching on God’s boundless mercy and love for His children assures the Christian that there is no problem too difficult, no situation too desperate, and no condition too bleak that He and His Word cannot bring comfort, courage, and the power to overcome adversity and sin. Jesus promised, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light" (Matt. 11:28-30, NIV).
THE BIBLICAL COUNSELING MOVEMENT (BCM) These and other biblical promises form the basis for the argument many Christians use to reject psychotherapy specifically and psychology generally as "a religious wolf in pseudoscientific clothing."
