61. Krystian Zimerman : Discographie Sélective

Frédéric Chopin
4 Ballades
Barcarolle opus 60
Fantaisie opus 49

Mon opinion

1988. Deutsche Grammophon 423 571-2 GH full price There aren't many composers who have left a legacy of pianism; compositionwise or in execution, that can match the one of Hungarian composer Franz (Ferenc) Liszt. He left a formidable bulk of works, consisting of compositions of his own as well as transcripions of works of predecessors and contemporary colleagues. The Beethoven symphonies and several of Schubert's lieder are examples of Liszt's great fascination for the piano as medium for the most diverse musical expressions. The composer-musician Franz Liszt was regarded as the greatest of all pianists of his time, which says quite a bit considering one of his most ardent admirers was friend, rival and colleague Frédéric Chopin: a most able pianist himself.
However it is as composer he has made his distinguished mark in music history. Franz Liszt is nothing less than one of the most original among composers, in his highly personal and experimental music. When one is confronted with the works of Liszt it becomes apparent that this man did not find the excisting musical conventions sufficiently developed or quite simply inadequate as frameworks for his compositions. Of the staggering amount of works he produced, only an extremely maginal number are written in the sonata form; two of which are presented here. Other composers naturally also have a fair portion of their opus, written in forms alternative to the sonata, but with Liszt this form is hardly ever in use, and when it is, it is always challenged.

Warsaw concerto
Zimerman tows his own
BY BECCA DEWAN
Don’t be alarmed if you don’t recognize the piano on stage at Merrill. Like many great artists, Krystian Zimerman is not without his eccentricities. For the last 11 of his 26 years of concertizing, he has traveled with his own piano in tow. He’s earned the right. After studying at the Katowice Conservatory, Zimerman became the youngest-ever winner of the International Chopin Competition, a win which opened the doors to concert halls worldwide. Music’s in his blood. Zimerman’s father, a factory worker in Warsaw, had a passion for making music. Almost daily, musicians congregated in his house to play chamber music — a ritual in which Zimerman participated at a very early age. (What a rich way to socialize — a cultural sophistication that Americans seem to lack.) So much for classical music being dominated by Germans. On Sunday, the Polish Zimerman will fill Merrill Auditorium with the sounds of music by composers from Poland and France, performing the music of Chopin, Ravel, and Godowsky.

Tonight he explores his Polish roots with works by Chopin alongside Godowsky's colourful and atmospheric i>Java Suite , inspired by the composer's visits to China and Java. 2 discs [81:44] full-price by Jonathan Yungkans Krystian Zimmerman may have had the right idea when it came to the orchestral parts of Chopin's two concertos. Form a crack orchestra from the best players you can find, undo every preconception about these scores and their "inferiority," drill the players in re-learning every nuance of these scores, then take the orchestra on tour to make doubly sure they have the pieces down before recording them. This approach can be extremely expensive and time-consuming, one that can have Accounting and Marketing shouting its collective head off, but it works brilliantly here. These concertos have never sounded as newly-minted or substantial as they do here, though other conductors, most notably Eugene Ormandy with Emil Gilels and Emanuel Ax, and Carlo Maria Giulini with Zimmerman, have shown how significant the orchestra can really be in these scores.Chopin may have lacked experience in orchestration, but he had a pretty fair idea of how he wanted the orchestra to undergird and dovetail with the soloist. Pros
Wonderful singing tone, astounding teamwork, impeccable sense of rhythm, good engineering.
Cons Sometimes searching for details at the expense of the music. The Bottom Line I would recommend this CD to anyone who is interested in Krystian Zimerman and the Rachmaninoff Piano Concertos. This is a wonderful recording. Full Review For many pianists all over the world, the piano concertos of Sergei Rachmaninoff (particularly the Third) are seen as the hardest within the piano concerto repertoire. These are works written by a supreme virtuoso of the instrument for people of the same caliber as him. As much as they works abound in beautiful melodies and are pervaded by Russian melancholy, these are works that demand the utmost attention from the soloist when it comes to making a recording. Indeed, Rachmaninoff himself recorded all of his piano concertos in the 1930s and 1940s and for some people these recordings are still regarded as the standard. Other pianists including Vladimir Horowitz and Arthur Rubinstein have recorded these works and made them their own, so it would come as no surprise that Krystian Zimerman has decided to record the First and Second Concertos for Deutsche Grammophon.
