Bart—k and Mahler
Symphony Hall
Saturday, October 8, 8 p.m.
By Thomas Chen Two young soloists joined maestro Seiji Ozawa and the Boston Symphony Orchestra on Saturday for a memorable and effective night of music-making. Pianist Krystian Zimerman played the Bart—k Piano Concerto No. 1. And soprano Christine SchŠfer sang in the last movement of Mahler's Symphony No. 4. Both soloists showed technical security and artistic finesse, splendidly led by Ozawa. Hungarian composer Bla Bart—k (1881-1945) wrote his first two piano concertos as vehicles for his own pianistic and compositional skills. This was not uncommon as Mozart, Beethoven, Rachmaninov, and Prokofiev also wrote for their own fingers. Bart—k's first piano concerto was written in the fall of 1926, for the occasion of his American debut. Although Bart—k ended up playing another of his works for his debut, his concerto did finally receive an American premiere in 1927. Because of the percussive use of the piano and dissonant harmonizations of folk melodies, the concerto received a less than enthusiastic reception. Besides Prokofiev, not many composers at that time really treated the piano as a percussion instrument. However difficult the work is to listen to, its innovations of repeated notes in distinct rhythmic units and treatment of the piano as a pitched percussion instrument have helped it survive as an influential piece in the concerto repertoire.

Published by Amadeus Press [340 pages (hardcover); ISBN: 1-57467-072-7]. In The Composer-Pianists: Hamelin and The Eight . Readers will find within these pages vivid and unusual portraits of the enigmatic, iconoclastic men who conceived some of the most challenging piano music ever written. Chapters on music criticism, virtuosity, eroticism and transcription further explore their ingenious creativity. The volume includes rare photographs and concludes with an extensive bibliography, listings of the complete solo piano works of The Eight, and discographies of their solo piano recordings. In exploring the art of those who knew their instrument both as composers and as pianists, this book serves, in the words of pianist Stephen Hough, "both as a fascinating, exhaustive study of the riches of the past and as a stimulating inspiration for the future."

Does practice make perfect? It depends on whom you ask...

Utopia gets surprisingly mixed reviews in classical music. Any number of artists and their admirers will tell you that their favorite performances are those that had no rehearsals. Then there are those who create a mystique around themselves by insisting on greenhouse circumstances that musicians are said to long for. The latest is Krystian Zimerman , the Polish pianist who is touring the world playing both Chopin concertos with an ensemble he hand-picked himself, the Polish Festival Orchestra, which offers him endless rehearsals and a chance to analyze nearly every chord. Even though the group has played engagements all over Europe and spent seven days making the Deutsche Grammophon recording that would take other forces seven hours, there are still daily rehearsals up to four hours long. "Five years ago, I wouldn't have dared this performance, because it's so far out of range of the kinds of performances we have on the market," he says.

UCLA Live presents internationally acclaimed pianist Krystian Zimerman in concert performing at 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 23, at UCLA's Royce Hall. This one hour, 45-minute performance has one intermission. Zimerman's program will feature Brahms' Six Klavierstucke, Op. 118; Beethoven's Sonata No. 31 in A-Flat Major, Op. 110; and Brahms' Sonata No. 3 in F minor, Op. 5. Zimerman is devoted to Russian and Polish music, as well as the works of Prokofiev and Beethoven. Critics praise his "warmth and brilliance" and his ability to reveal music's inner voices and hidden melodies, which leaves audiences begging for more. The Washington Post has written of his work, "Zimerman gave more than an inkling to his audience as to why the Grand Prix du Disques and other recording industry awards fall to him like so much confetti. Zimerman has wonderful control … he seems to build phrases from the inside out — finding each pivotal point, then working out to the ends." Born in Poland into a family of rich music-making traditions, Zimerman began playing piano at the age of 5, later studying with Andrei Jasinski at the Music Conservatory in Katowice. Having achieved early success at a number of piano competitions, he embarked upon his international career after winning the Grand Prix at the 1975 Warsaw Chopin Competition, where he was the youngest competitor.

(DG 2 CD 435773-2). As described by the editor of Gramophone, James Jolly, it is " a work of infinite variety and breathtaking colours. It may not be a conventional way of interpreting these masterpieces, but it is one of enormous insight and an impressive staging post in the career of one of the century's undisputed keyboard masters. Herbert Glass reviewed the discs for the Los Angeles Times on June 12, 1994: " In his stunningly fine new recording of the two books of Debussy Preludes, he is at once the most analytical of pianists and the most imaginative. What strikes the listener from the outset is the reflectiveness that Zimerman has invested in these performances. Biographie
Maurizio Pollini
