2 John Bell Young SUMMER PIANO IN THE BIG APPLE In one ingeniously designed event after another, the IKIF offers two weeks of intensive music making as it brings in internationally renowned concert artists to perform and teach. Afternoon masterclasses and lectures gave way to evening recitals in an astonishing variety of programs. Students mostly professional, but with a smattering of amateurs as well fly in from all over the world, and are provided with the opportunity to play, in both private and public settings, for the participating artists of their choice. (Mr Rose wisely refuses to pigeonhole anyone into studying with a single teacher, as some piano festivals do.) The centerpiece of the festival in its closing days was a piano competition, sponsored by Dorothy Mackenzie, offering a US$ 10,000 prize to be shared by the winners.
In spite of the festival's emphasis on piano repertoire, Mr Rose is hardly one to forsake the value of chamber music, which was prominently featured as the focus of several concerts. The Beaux Arts Trio, now going into its fiftieth year as the most celebrated ensemble of its kind in the world, was led in impeccable performances by its founder, pianist Menahem Pressler. In an unusual program of solo piano and chamber works, Mr Pressler's account of Debussy's Estampes shimmered sotto voce

Neil Young News Release "Time Fades Away"
On September 21, 2001, just days after the 9-11 terror attack on the U.S., Neil Young performed John Lennon 's song "Imagine" on the broadcast musical benefit telethon "America: A Tribute to Heroes". Simulcast live from London, New York and Los Angeles on the four major TV networks and the Internet, the program was seen by an estimated 89 million viewers and netted roughly $230 million in donations. For many, Young's performance was emotionally wrenching and heart felt. Performing on a grand piano and accompanied by a small orchestra of violins, Young's rendition of Lennon's "Imagine" spoke to many of us who were suffering from the terrible tragedies in New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia (the Pentagon is actually located across the Potomac River from Washington, DC). Those in the studio that night, reported that Young appeared to be on the verge of tears upon completing the song. Pulse Magazine wrote that Young's performance of "Imagine" on the Benefit telecast was "one of those moments you never forget."

Misogyny, gangsta rap, and The Piano
    bell hooks
    ZMagazine, February 1994
For the past several months white mainstream media has been calling me to hear my views on gangsta rap. Whether major television networks, or small independent radio shows, they seek me out for the black and feminist "take" on the issue. After I have my say, I am never called back, never invited to do the television shows or the radio spots. I suspect they call, confident that when we talk they will hear the hardcore "feminist" trash of gangsta rap. When they encounter instead the hardcore feminist critique of white supremacist capitalist patriarchy, they lose interest.
To white dominated mass media, the controversy over gangsta rap makes great spectacle. Besides the exploitation of these issues to attract audiences, a central motivation for highlighting gangsta rap continues to be the sensationalist drama of demonizing black youth culture in general and the contributions of young black men in particular. It is a contemporary remake of "Birth of a Nation" only this time we are encouraged to believe it is not just vulnerable white womanhood that risks destruction by black hands but everyone. When I counter this demonization of black males by insisting that gangsta rap does not appear in a cultural vacuum, but, rather, is expressive of the cultural crossing, mixings, and engagement of black youth culture with the values, attitudes, and concerns of the white majority, some folks stop listening.

An interview with Richard Tognetti, the Artistic Director of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and John Bell, actor/director and the head of The Bell Shakespeare Company.
Transcript: Andrew Ford: Stravinsky’s ‘The Soldier’s Tale’ was composed during the First World War, and at the time, Stravinsky had had huge successes with his three big ballet scores, ‘Firebird’, ‘Petrushka’ and ‘The Rite of Spring’, but suddenly with the war upon him, there wasn’t the stomach really for putting on enormous premiers, there wasn’t the money to put on enormous premiers, and Stravinsky himself, who was in exile in Switzerland, had had his royalties frozen by Russia. So he was impecunious. He had to do something, and he wrote a very small-scale work involving seven instruments, and three actors and a dancer. And this piece is one of the great works of music theatre. It’s going to be performed nationally in September by the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Bell Shakespeare Company, and in a moment we’ll hear an interview that I did yesterday afternoon just after they’d finished rehearsal with Richard Tognetti of the ACO and John Bell. Before we do that, let’s listen to the beginning of the piece. Here it is, spoken by Sir Ian McKellan and as the soldier, Sting.

    Reinventing Chopin:
    Beguiling Melodies, Revolutionary Spirit
Marion Delorme ran afoul of the censors. The first performance of Hernani
Thereafter he carried Poland within himself, harvesting her indigenous folk melodies, vigorous dances and, indeed, the spirit of her people, aristocrat and peasant alike. It was precisely these elements that allowed his music to assume its political character, in that he unequivocally embraced the very cultural idiosyncrasies that Poland's enemies hoped to suppress. In codifying those homegrown melodies, quixotic rhythms and exotic modal colors, he indicted the oppressors and in so doing gave a powerful voice to Poland's diaspora. The implications were not lost to Robert Schumann, who wrote, "if the czar knew what a dangerous enemy threatens him in the works of Chopin, in the simple melodies of those mazurkas, he would banish that music. Those works are like cannons hidden beneath flowers."
While oversimplification is a sore temptation for those in search of a political subtext in art and who assign some ersatz symbolic meaning to every idiosyncratic inflection, the latent political content of Chopin's music has remained relatively unexplored. Few composers, save Beethoven and Shostakovich, have harvested music's symbolic potential so effectively - and with such deliberate ambiguity - in an effort to indict injustice. And few works held greater significance for Chopin and his countrymen than the E-Minor Concerto. Indeed, it became, in effect, the national anthem of his patriotism. It is no accident that he chose it, on the eve of his departure for Vienna in 1830, as the centerpiece of his farewell concert at the National Theater of Warsaw.
